The kings are forced to surrender, but the terms for Estveld and Ostveld appear suspiciously lenient; each kingdom will maintain its independence, so long as the royal bloodline continues unbroken. The only catch seems to be that the Cheil Emperor is allowed to choose each generation's bride.
Prince Cavan of Ostveld fears he won't be allowed to marry the princess to whom he was betrothed. Prince Gair of Estveld never intended to marry at all. But the surrender is already signed, and they are left with no choice but to travel to the capital of the Cheil Empire where they will learn who—or what—the Emperor has in store for them.

Pleasantly surprised.

Once purchased I still had reservations about the book and it's vague synopsis. However, the opening chapter literally further piqued my interest and rest is history.

You never know with romantic fantasy

With romantic fantasy you never know whether it will be fluff or substance.
This book opens up on a medieval battle ground. The people ostensibly leading the battle hear trumpets, which are apparently signaling that the battle is over. They all look around at each other and ask "who won?"
So if you're a fantasy fan, you know going in that this isn't going to be an immersive medieval world. The rest of the book continues in much the same vein.
The premise is that the main characters, both princes, are forced to wed after this battle is lost. They are from countries called "ostveld" and "estveld," a decision that confounded me as both of those prefixes mean "east." Ongoing feuding between the countries is a theme (maybe because they are competing for the most easterly country?) , with the general tone of a preschool classroom.
I really though the main characters acted like spoiled children through much of it, but it wasn't unreadable. Just fairly fluffy romantic fantasy.
