Yes, A Priest Can Have Valuable Dating Advice!

Happily married for 27+ years I know it is only by the GRACE of God I found my hubby. We were very young, and grew up (literally) in our faith together. Although we did not understand why God was so important in our lives back then - and in preparing for our marriage there was something that tugged at us to include Him. Although barely practicing Catholics when we married - we also knew it was important to have a wedding in the church - a Sacramental Union. The grace of that decision would be called into action many times in our married life!!

Now both very active Catholics we are so grateful that we responded to that nudge - which we know realize was the Holy Spirit. As I watch my younger single friends try to navigate the dating waters - being so blessed to have found my soulmate at 16 - I felt at a loss to help them. Finding Christian Dating in a Godless World was truly a godsend. His late vocation (at age 34) allowed for his own experiences of dating - and no his advice is not jump the dating ship and enter a convent or seminary!! Though, as an aside, that is an important decision as marriage to be discerned by young adults!! #justsayin

Ok, it's not "Comedy Central" or anything, but this book is made a much easier read through the application of humor. I prefer this book due to its compact explanations. What I do not understand about Pathology texts in general is the lack of color photos. It seems to be fairly straightforward to me- if you have a figure labeled with the color description, but a black & white photo- you are missing something!

Otherwise, this is an excellent text for Gen Path. Just one vet student's opinion. (And, yes, I passed Gen Path.)

I thought the book was great ! (SPOILERS) I liked the twist were the author combined a new character named Naomi placed in the oringanal story of jeff the killer with new characters . Even the part where Naomi turned out just as how jeff had and began a killing team and had met the other characters from Creepy Pasta . My only complaints is the cover where it doesn't have good quality on the picture . But thats just a minor one so don't count that . The book was thinner then I expected . But my real complaint is the story (Not the story itself) . It was sorta liked it was made for a fourth grader . There wasn't any vocabulary words that I couldn't recgonize . And the story itself went a little to fast to each part to the next part . I also wish that the book would have more describing words like metaphors to make the words have mor detail and depth . Although the book was fancinating with Horror, Romance genre's in it . Wishing for another book from "Neesha Nickelson" .

Leterman Discloses Secrets of Selling

In this book, Leterman discloses what he believes the secrets to selling are. The book is wonderfully formatted and breaks down the different aspects of selling into nice, easily digestible chapters. Incorporating interesting and entertaining anecdotes, he manages to keep the reader focused and learning through his experiences as an insurance salesman.
Selling, truly is an art, as he describes it. He also points out how selling can be as basic as selling yourself as a friend - it doesn't have to be a product.
All in all, I enjoyed this book. It has a lot that one could learn from it and I only rate it a medium because at certain points it lags in detail.

The Best New War Graphic Novel

I purchased "The 'Nam" Volume 1 by Marvel for two reasons. The first is that I am a Vietnam Combat Veteran and was interested on how the subject would be presented; the second is because I enjoy graphic novels, and they bring back memories of reading comic books when I was younger.

The graphic novel follows the life of Ed Marks as he enters the U.S. Army in 1966 and goes through training and is sent to Vietnam. In Vietnam Pfc. Marks is assigned to the 4/23 Infantry, Mechanized. This is an actual unit that served with distinction in Vietnam with the 25 Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning) from 1966 until it left Vietnam in 1971. I served with the 4th Infantry Division, 2/8 Infantry Mechanized, Company A, 1st Squad from Oct 1968 till Jan 1970.

For those interested 4/23 Infantry means 4th Battalion (Mechanized) 23rd Infantry Regiment.
Mechanized Infantry had the ability to close in on the enemy faster and with greater fire power. Cav (Calvary) units also had this mobility with Huey's and gunships. Once contact was made the infantry always dismounted, the APC's (Armored Personal Carriers) were death traps.
Mechanized infantry also walked a lot, and at times were sent in by chopper for an air assault.

Considering the limitations placed on the publication of "The'Nam" by the Comic Code as expressed in the introduction by the editor, Larry Hama, I feel the people at Marvel have done a good job of trying to bring the Vietnam War to the attention of a readership that in all likelihood was not born during those years.

There are exceptions I take to parts of stories included in this first volume, but there are also some very realistic points made. For instance; no one ever built a fire at night while out on patrol (it would give your position away) and few companies went back to base camps, we stayed in the bush for months. Also to my knowledge no one flew into Vietnam as replacements under a hail of gunfire as depicted early in the issue. The exceptions to that are the Marines who flew into Khe Sanh between January and April in 1968 when it was under siege. These are minor issues, after all this is a graphic novel.

However, the author Doug Murray has done a good job tying in the different scenario of combat in Vietnam. The illustrators Mike Golden and Wayne Vansant have done excellent work in their representations of the military equipment and scenery considering again the restraints placed on them in adhering to the Comic Code.

No one will ever know the true horrors of war by reading a graphic novel or any novel of war. All the same, I recommend this graphic novel for those who would like to know a little of that forgotten war and at the same time enjoy a terrific read with great graphics. I look forward to reading Volume 2.

The best way to introduce kids to the Vietnam War

"The 'Nam" is simply one of the best pop-culture depictions of our troops' experience in Vietnam that there is. And easily the best for teaching young people about it.

Written by a Vietnam vet and edited by another, each issue is a stand-alone story set in the early days of American involvement there. The dialogue can be a bit "comic booky" for me but hey, that's the medium. This is as real the war is likely to get in the pages of a comic book.

This volume includes the first 10 issues, and that's really my only complaint: It should be collected in 12-issue clumps. Each story took place one month apart, showing the war in real time as the issues came out. And because a tour in Vietnam was 12 months, we see one character rotate in for Issue 1 and head "back to the block" come Issue 12.

In summary, "The 'Nam" is a PG-appropriate version of the film "Hamburger Hill," and one that covered more ground as it wasn't limited by moving-picture runtime.

Really enjoyed these when I was a kid.

Entertaining - but not what I really expected. Also - the color was off and I can't find the volume covering the last years of the war. For people who want to learn about what Nam was really like - this will contribute to your overall understanding of the conflict (for example: the realities of communist terrorism in South Vietnam - a subject western media all but ignored because it occurred in the hinterlands - where cold beer and flush toilets weren't available - very few reporters bothered to go). I thought some of the back stories (kit carson scouts for example) were excellent and I really enjoyed the characters. I just want to see someone put together the last volume.

In the tradition of his other works, he opens up by explaining the reasons and structure behind this book. As is described in the 'Product Summary', he breaks the manual into two sections: "Ground" and "Pound". Each section, consisting of several chapters, includes clear pictures with concise explanations, a list of drills, and some helpful pointers.

The materials in this book have been covered extensively elsewhere, but have been compiled here for the express purpose of the illustrating the essential components of GnP.

Catherine Brady is the author of three story collections, including Curled in the Bed of Love, winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction. A former president of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs, she teaches in the MFA in Writing Program at the University of San Francisco, USA.

Techniques for Evoking Emotional Logic in Fiction

Catherine Brady's Story Logic and the Craft of Fiction is intended for readers already familiar with a basic textbook used in writing courses-- books such as "Writing Fiction" by Janet Burroway, "Shaping the Story" by Mark Baechtel, or "A Short Story Writer's Companion" by Tom Bailey. (See my reviews of these on amazon.com.)

In the opening chapter, Brady notes: "...Good fiction engages a reader in struggling to reconcile tension and inconsistencies" (p 4). As this engagement in literary fiction is achieved via subtext, the writer should strive "to sustain an enhanced ratio of subtext to text, and any methods that achieve this justify themselves. How all the elements of fiction work interdependently to serve this end forms the subject for this entire book" (p 7). The author presents several examples drawn from her teaching experience including a detailed analysis of Katherine Mansfield's much anthologized short story "The Garden Party"--one of my favorites. I tested the clarity of her analysis on a reader unfamiliar with the story. The reader understood it readily. The subsequent chapters are replete with lucid craft-analyses of classic and contemporary works.

In the second chapter, aptly titled "Elusiveness at the Heart of Story Structure," Brady analyzes the emotional logic in short stories by Grace Paley, Junot Diaz, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Alice Munro. "What about novels?" I was asking myself. Brady notes: "The pressure for economy in a short story makes it a perfect vehicle for considering how writers make choices about such gaps, but the principle holds true for a plot of any length" (p15). Not to worry, the third chapter is titled "Chapter Structure and Shapeliness in the Novel" and includes analyses of William Faulkner's "Intruder in the Dust," and J. M. Coetzee's postmodern novel "Diary of a Bad Year." Despite my not having read the Coetzee novel, I understood her seven-page analysis. Brady is a master of expository writing.

The fourth chapter, "Three Key Strategies of Story Logic," explains peripheral detail, recurrence, and sequencing. It includes an analysis of Ernest Hemingway's short story "The Gambler, the Nun, and the Radio," as well as two examples of student manuscripts submitted in the author's MFA workshop courses. "In the kinesthetic play of ordering and reordering events and scenes and sentences, the trick lies in keeping a loose hold on intention while staying alert for any opportunities that arise. By lucky accident and persistence, playfulness can arrive at the right arrangement to make silence speak" (p. 69).

Early in the fifth chapter, "Captured in Motion: Dynamic Characterization," Brady writes: "The relationship between character and plot is something like a Mobius strip that reverses in itself endlessly; you need a plot to reveal character, and you need a character to capable of setting a plot in motion (p 73). The chapter includes analyses of James Joyce's story "The Dead" and Raymond Carver's "Careful," as well as Alice McDermott's novel, "Child of My Heart."

In the sixth chapter, "Point of View Q & A," Brady observes: "Overly scrupulous policing (especially in the workshop, by nature predisposed to fault-finding) pressures writers to sacrifice vitality to narrow notions of veracity" (p 101). Her detailed analysis of Alice Munro's "My Mother's Dream," told by the baby she's carrying, suggests that we could "accept it as a retrospective reconstruction of events the narrator has been told throughout her childhood" (p 105). Not that this is unprecedented: Laurence Sterne's "Tristram Shandy," one of my favorite postmodern novels, was published in 1766.

Chapters seven and eight explain the use of synecdoche, metonymy, and patterning of imagery as craft elements in fiction. Brady analyzes Anton Chekov's "Gooseberries," with a helpful Venn diagram, as well as Michael Cunningham's novel "Hours." The ninth chapter, "Showing and Telling," explains how effective telling can artfully include showing as in Tobias Wolff's novel, "Old School."

In the concluding chapter, "The Sentence as a Touchstone of Style" Brady acknowledges that she can be "a grammar geek," and, but also adds, "Correctness counts, but to be merely correct is tantamount to entering a plow horse in the Kentucky Derby" (p 155). Brady diagrams sentences from George Eliot's "Middlemarch," William Faulkner's "Barn Burning," and Virginia Woolf's "Mrs Dalloway." She concludes with this advice: "Fiction is written sentence by sentence, and the habit of thinking about syntax as a dramatic element should be part of your composing process, not just a task reserved for revision. Despite all the advice books that recommend settling for a sloppy first draft and trusting to revision, a practice of indifference toward syntax usually means a writer will rely on conventional arrangement of works to order conventional ways of seeing. One sentence lead to another, and a bad sentence leads to another like itself" (p 169). Excellent advice for short-story writers. Novel writers would likely find it hard to follow and prefer settling for "a sloppy first draft," deferring concerns about syntax to subsequent drafts.

Brady's fiction-craft book is enhanced with excellent exercises for the intermediate/advanced student.

Excellent book for broad story logic, context, themes and subtext. This book is compact and easy to read. It is full of good advice for the beginning and amateur writer. I love it. I stopped highlighting as it looked like I was going to highlight the entire book.
