Among the best dollars I've ever spent on literature! LOADS of fun!

LOVE this book! Bought 4 extras to give away! I can make a sailor blush with my ability to string together expletives, and I'm trying to get out of the habit. This is just too fun! Instead of calling someone a[n] [expletive] [expletiving] [expletive], I can call them a knotty-pated froward rampallian! Rolls off the tongue with as much weight as its less literary counterparts, and it's a deliciously satisfying alternative to having a potty mouth. Bonus feature? You get twice the fun when the person you just insulted requests translation into English! Gaggles of giggles trading insults with the recipients of my extra copies. It's cleaning up my mouth, and making me want to read more Shakespeare! The bard rules! Knew it before, know it in spades now. Get this book, you bunch-back'd nook-shotten princoxes, you. You'll be glad you did.

Get You Teen to Like Shakespeare!

This is a very funny book. And if you'd like to discourage your teen (or older child) from overusing the unimaginative F-word, perhaps this little tome is just the ticket. I think if teachers were allowed to use it in English class for one or two days while teaching Shakespeare, they might get their students to pay more attention. I can see a lesson dedicated to inventing even more insults worthy of the bard using modern language. Failing in that, the book is good for a few laughs at parties and social gatherings. Just put it out on the coffee table and see what happens.

Four letter words are so low brow, when compared to the beauty and wit of Shakespeare. Each page of this three ring bound book is divided into three sections with an insulting noun, adjective, or adverb used by the bard. On the back is the definition.
It is extremely fun to have verbal sparring contests with this handy booklet. Leave one out on the coffee table and see what happens - it does liven things up for sure. I would recommend buying two copies or more and having contests for most original insult. This book can be a lot of fun at parties. So don't be a slobbery, muddy-mettled dullard. About the Author
Msgr. Louis Gaston de Segur was a popular Catholic apologist and author, born in 1820 at Paris. As a youth, he was rather indifferent towards his faith, but later experienced a reawakening to the Church and embraced it. He went on to write a considerable number of small books, including The Pope, Confession: A Little Book for the Reluctant, and Communion. He entered the seminary of St. Sulpice and received Holy Orders in 1847. Msgr. de Segur spent his time as a priest evangelizing children, the poor, and prisoners, all without pay. Five years after his ordination, he became auditor of the Roman Rota, and was held in high regard by Pope Pius IX. After going blind, he began writing again, and focused his works particularly on apologetics and for those who ignored religion. His books include Chats on Protestantism, Freemasons, and Familiar Instructions on All the Truths of Religion. Father Louis de Segur died in 1881.

A must have booklet for any Catholic!

This booklet is excellent for those that need to get back to confession. Christ instituted this sacrament, and all Catholics should embrace it with love. This book was written by a priest in the 1800's, but it still applies today. It answers every possible question that we have about confession like ,"Is it absolutely necessary to confess?" Read it while you are in line for confession. Your mind will be cleared of any doubt you have.

Francis J. Moloney, SDB (DPhil, University of Oxford), is a Senior Professorial Fellow of Australian Catholic University at its Melbourne, Australia, campus. Book by a Consummate Scholar and Excellent Teacher

I have not completed the book, but from what I've read so far, the Rev. Dr. Francis J. Moloney again shows himself to be a consummate biblical school AND an excellent teacher, AND a faithful member of the Body of Christ. (Full disclosure: I may be a bit biased as he was once my dean and colleague at CUA in DC--and is still a friend). All of these come together in this work, which is rooted in Fr. Moloney's deep faith, built on his critical scholarship, and put forth is his ability to communicate the fruits of scholarship to others who wish their faith to be strengthened or others who are openly searching and learning about these early Christian and canonical works. After this book, I'd heartily recommend his commentaries on John and Mark!

J. David Bolter is Wesley Chair of New Media at Georgia Institute of Technology. He is author or coauthor of three other books, including Windows and Mirrors: Interaction Design, Digital Art, and the Myth of Transparency.

A critical look at how computers impact human interaction...

I imagine I would never have come across "Turing's Man" if it hadn't been required reading for a course I took at NYU entitled "The Digital Revolution." The course examined the sociological impact of the computerized world and the ever-expanding internet on human life and interaction, which means that Bolter's text was just what we needed: an overview of where technological progress has come from, where it is going, and what it is doing to us in the process.
Although Turing's Man is a little bit dated -- it was published in 1984, before the internet had even taken on a significant presence in modern life, it suggests and foreshadows a numer of themes which have become more prominent since the text was printed.
Beginning with an overview and survey of technological evolution, from the Ancient World right up through the present, Bolter does a fine job of articulating the complex process through which technology changes and is changed by the society into which it is introduced.
Once this idea has been established, Bolter pauses to provide a basic overview of how computers work... and while it changes over time, his description is general enough as to still be accurate -- AND non-technical enough to be understood without much computer knowledge.
He then goes on to examine certain ideas as they apply to both humans and computers, comparing the disparate nature of such fundamental concepts as time, space, language, and logic.
(Maybe this sounds confusing when I write it, but rest assured that Bolter is more articulate than I am feeling just now. He explains it all, and explains it well.)
In closing, Bolter considers the changes that computers have already initiated in our lifestyles and our thinking processes, and ventures some predictions as to future changes and developments.
Remember, though, that this book WAS written in 1984, and that the developments which we have seen since then are more extensive than those that Bolter laid out... if you are more interested in the specific impact of newer technologies, such as the internet and telecommunications, you'd be better served with a subscription to WIRED magazine, or a text such as Marshall McLuhan's "Understanding Media." This text provides a more general look at computers, their origin, and the fundamental ideas that they have instilled in our lives.
Fascinating ideas, especially if you are interested in the role that computers and new media have in shaping and directing our modern lives... "Turing's Man" isn't casual reading, perhaps, but it IS engaging and provocative.

About the Author

Bill Naughton (1910-1992) was a British playwright and author best known for his plays 'Spring and Port Wine' and 'Alfie', the latter which he adapted for screen in the iconic 1966 film starring Michael Caine.

Born in Ireland, he grew up in Lancashire and his writing contains vivid evocations of the impoverished mining communities of the North of England, bound together by ties of family, kith and kin.

Bill Naughton won the Screenwriters award 1967 and 1968 and the Prix Italia for Radio Play '1974' before settling in the Isle of Man where he wrote several children's books based on his childhood memories.

brass in the muck

I've loved this collection of short stories since I was a kid, and to rediscover them on my kindle thirty-odd years later was a bit like suddenly finding an old moneybox with about $370 in it in the attic while searching for functioning Christmas lights.

The fact that they are all set many decades ago hasn't dated them at all. The language still has its salty verve and punch. It's not easy to pick out a "best" story but I'll always have a massive soft spot for "17 Oranges".

Read this. It's a beautiful tome.

The book describes fully the broad range of approaches to interest rate modelling: short-rate models, no-arbitrage models, the Heath-Jarrow-Morton framework, multifactor models, forward measures, positive-interest models, and market models. Later chapters cover some related topics, including numerical methods, credit risk, and model calibration. Significantly, the book develops the martingale approach to bond pricing in detail, concentrating on risk-neutral pricing, before later exploring recent advances in interest rate modelling where different pricing measures are important.

About the Author
Andrew J. G. Cairns is Professor of Financial Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University in the United Kingdom. After completing his Ph.D. in statistics he worked as an actuary with a major life insurer, and since rejoining academia he has specialized in interest rate modelling and financial risk management for pension plans.

Good intro on short-rate models and forward/LIBOR-rate models

The book assumes that you've done some stochastic analysis courses before. You need to be familiar with Girsanov's theorem (change of measure) and some PDE theories (Feynman-Kac) to better understand the materials. The book starts with the introduction of instruments in the interest rate market. Then before introducing the continuous-time models, it shows how to price interest rate derivatives/ZCB in a binomial model, the classical Ho/Lee model is also introduced. The chapter on short-rate models is good, it shows 2 different ways to price zero-coupon bonds, martingale approach and the PDE approach. The book even proves ZCB/options on ZCB under the Vasicek and CIR models (in the appendices). More recent developments such as LIBOR/HJM are also introduced.The book might be a littel bit difficult to read at the start (formal maths), however, it rewards perseverance.
P.S. the solutions to the exercises of chapters 1-5 can be found from A.Cairn's web-page.
P.S.2 note that the book does not give any details on implementing different interest rate models in practice.

very nice and clear, but no solutions to exercises

I agree with the previous reviewer. The exposition is very nice and clear, one is not bogged down with too complicated calculations of too complicated models. It's a shame that there are no solutions to end of chapter exercises though. Hence one star down.

An excellent book!!!

This book provides an excellent reference and point of view of old and new topics in the interest rate modelling field.
From short rate models, HJM model, multifactor models, positive interest models and market models, it gives you a very well explanation all without forget the calibration of them.
You can not find many books about this topic. This one gives a clear and easy to follow chapters in order to increase your knowledge of this not easy field. The formality is a key point in all the book.
