Excellent volume but only for the seasoned statistical mechanic. A good introduction to Kirkwood/Buff theory which is the main strength of this work. Novices in solution thermodynamics would be advised to steer clear.

New book on solutions

This is an important book that provides a clear account of the molecular theory of solutions and mixtures based mainly on the Kirkwood-Buff theory that was developed many years ago. The theory could not have been fully exploited until Ben-Naim developed methods to calculate the Kirkwood-Buff (KB) integrals from experimental data rather than from the pair correlation functions.

The KB integrals, as well as some derived quantities, provide information about the local properties of the system, as opposed to their global properties described by the excess thermodynamic functions that were and are commonly used. Ben-Naim also introduced a new measure of the thermodynamics of solvation that does not depend on hypothetical standard states that were traditionally part of solution chemistry. The book is written very clearly and the arguments are carefully presented and illustrated with examples. It is strongly recommended for both the beginning graduate student and experienced scientist with interests in solutions.

Don't hesitate, buy it!

This is an excellent book that highly succeeds in explaining a difficult subject! Thermodynamics of solution mixtures has a long history and much has been written on this topic. I am amongst those of you that have been confused from time to time by the various definitions of excess functions, activity coefficients and reference states. In "Molecular Theory of Solutions", Ben-Naim introduces the reader to the elementary statistical mechanics of liquids and solution mixtures. A central theme of the book is the Kirkwood-Buff (KB) theory of solution, which, as originally shown by Ben-Naim, can be used to extract (local) molecular properties from (global) thermodynamic properties. Ben-Naim next uses KB theory to derive a thermodynamic formalism for ideal- and nonideal solutions. I was intrigued when first reading this newly derived formalism. Being educated to calculate "deviations from Raoult" (just numbers, nothing more), suddenly nonideality acquired a very clear microscopic significance. Beautiful! I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in the subject, in particular to those of you that teach it.

About the Author
Nancy E. Marion is a professor of political science at the University of Akron. She holds a doctorate and a master of arts degree in political science from the State University of New York, a master of science degree in criminal justice from American University, and a bachelor of science degree in administration of justice from the Pennsylvania State University. She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and books. Her research interests center around the interplay of politics and criminal justice.

Willard M. Oliver is a professor of criminal justice at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He holds a doctorate and a master of arts degree in political science from West Virginia University and master of science and bachelor of science degrees from Radford University. He has taught criminal justice for over 20 years, primarily in the area of policing, crime policy, and criminal justice history. He is the author of numerous textbooks, including Community-Oriented Policing, Homeland Security, Homeland Security for Policing, and A History of Crime and Criminal Justice in America. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous articles for professional publications. Oliver serves as the editor for the Journal of Qualitative Criminal Justice & Criminology and is the official historian for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. He is a retired military police officer with the U.S. Army Reserves and a former police officer. Oliver is an avid runner and has completed 10 marathons. He is married and has three children.

The book was in great condition. The material within it really opens the readers eyes to how things are actually done in the so called "Justice" system. It points readers minds down different paths, but, if the reader is willing to let go of their cognitive dissonance and perceive things differently, it can really help show how unjust the justice system is. A fantastic read!

A MASTERPIECE

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I bless the day many years ago--in college, I think--when I found it in a bookstore quite by accident (for I am not a naval buff and have read none of the Hornblower novels.) It was out of print for many years, and I welcome it back.
This is an anti-war novel written by a military historian who grieves over the way his country fought the Great War. It has parts which are hilariously funny (Curzon's courtship and marriage, the family he marries into, the wedding night (nothing graphic here, of course--Forester is a gentleman); it offers a scathing view of England's class system at work; it is dead right (is there a pun here?) in dealing with trench warfare.
Buy it, savor it, re-read it. If you happen to teach, assign it to your students along with All Quiet on the Western Front. This is a GREAT book!

Classic novel of the first world war.

This is one of C.S. Forester's first novels about war, published in 1936 and hence pre-dating Hornblower.

Like almost all the novels which Forester wrote before he created the Hornblower books, this is brilliant, far less well known today than it deserves, and consequently quite rare. The author H.G. Wells described "The General" as "a magnificent piece of work."

Some of Forester's other books, particularly those describing battles against opponents of whom he strongly disapproved of such as Hitler's nazis or indeed Napoleon, can come over as patriotic to the point of jingoism or chauvinism. This story does not come into that category and it would not be far from the truth to call it one of the first great anti-war novels.

If you collect books about war, and you are fortunate enough to find a copy of "The General" for sale at a remotely reasonable price, buy it at once.

This novel describes the military career of a fictional first world war general. It begins and ends between the wars, with a sharp pen-picture of the retired general Curzon sitting in a bathchair on Bournemouth Promenade, having lost his leg during the great war and never managed to learn to walk properly with an artificial one.

Then the story goes back to Curzon's first battle as a subaltern in 1899 during the Boer war, and follows him through to the climax of the book at the battle of St Quentin on March 21st 1918 when the last desperate German offensive nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Forester appears to have set out to do three things; to entertain, inform, and explain. He entertains with an engaging story; he informs by describing the ghastly conditions and waste of life which was the first world war in the trenches; and he tries to explain one possible answer to the question of how British commanders could possibly have given the orders which sent hundreds of thousands of young men to their deaths.

One of the most memorable passages in the book describes the debate as generals and senior staff officers of an army corps prepared a report of why the attack they had just organised had failed and how to succeed next time. "In some ways it was like the debate of a group of savages as to how to extract a screw from a piece of wood. Accustomed only to nails, they had made one effort to pull out the screw by main force, and now that it had failed they were devising methods of applying more force still ... they could hardly be blamed for not guessing that by rotating the screw it would come out after the exertion of far less effort".

But that does not mean that Forester is simply repeating the popular caricature of First World War generals as dangerous idiots. Although he is critical of the mistakes of the generals who wasted so many lives, his criticism is far more sophisticated than the old "Lions led by donkeys" cliche.

Although Curzon, the central figure of this book, is old fashioned and conventional, he is intelligent enough to change his mind when confronted with clear evidence of the need to do so, and decisive enough to enforce that change of mind on others when many men would freeze in panic. Had he been as stupid as some reviewers make out, Curzon would not have survived the first few months of World War 1, let alone been rapidly promoted.

He is intelligent enough to realise that his men need to eat and to make sure that they are fed properly, and to make use of officers who understand newfangled things like engineering, railways, or how many men it takes to carry a gas canister. He is ruthless enough to sack staff officers who are not up to the job even when one of them is his wife's cousin.

Within minutes of arriving at the front and seeing what artillery and machine-guns can do, Curzon abandons his pre-war attitude of deliberately evading training on how to dig trenches, and instead orders his men to dig for their lives, demanding compliance from junior officers who are afraid that the men might get dirt on their uniforms. "God damn it, man!" he explodes, "Get your men digging, and don't ask damn fool questions."

In the first round of battles in the Great War, heroic efforts from Curzon in the face of greatly superior german numbers prevent the British from being flanked and probably defeated at the First Battle of Ypres. Having fought with distinction up to this point, he is promoted to much more senior positions. But then things start to go wrong.

Forester makes a great many good points about the need to use the tactics which will win the current battle rather than the last war: indeed, that even the tactics which won earlier battles of the current war should be dropped if they are out of date. But that is not the only message he is trying to put over.

The main theme of "The General" is a World War One version of the Peter Principle. The very qualities which make Curzon successful on the battlefield up to and including the command of a brigade have disastrous consequences for England when he is a Lieutenant-General commanding an army corps, and when both he and all the other senior officers of the army are still displaying the characteristics which colonels and brigadiers need to hold their regiments in the line.

Forester states quite explicitly in the book that the very strengths of the World War One generals, not just their weaknesses, were part of the problem. I quote - "It might have been ... more advantageous to England if the British Army had not been quite so full of men of high rank who were so ready for responsibility, so unflinchingly devoted to their duty, so unmoved in the face of difficulties, of such unfaltering courage."

This book is an unforgettable classic.

Really funny and creative, guffaw-inducing, comedy

It says right on the cover "A PARODY !!!", referring both to the history of the world, and to Facebook. This comical frolic redacts the world history as a series of Facebook wall snippets among imaginary and not so imaginary user accounts. In doing so Mr. Overstreet cunningly parodies both Facebook conventions (etiquette, language, humor) and Historical pretensions (merging both scientific, religious, political, and chronological modes that otherwise would never be caught dead in the same book).

I recommend this highly to anyone who enjoys a good laugh, and who takes neither themselves nor Facebook nor the history of the world too seriously.

Now excuse me while I go un-friend god.

Clever, humorous and even educational

Facebook can be educational? Surely you jest. I'll admit I'm on Facebook at most twice a Week so I'm hardly what you'd call an avid user. However, even a casual user can appreciate "The World According to Facebook" and find its humor laugh out loud hilarious. Wylie Overstreet probably wasn't the only person with this idea but his posts on the CoolMaterial.com website caught on like wildfire and for good reason. In "The World According to Facebook" Overstreet further explores the "what ifs" of the world's history as Facebook statuses. Covering everything from the birth of the Universe to the dawn of the human race and all of mankind's ups and downs, it's all touched upon in this book. The real gem is in the author's witty presentation combined with modern day jargon and the laziness of the English language that's so prevalently used today. Here are my thoughts on The World According to Facebook;

Pros

+ Extremely quick-witted and often un-politically correct humorous status updates. Even the chapter introductions were snarky and funny. Several of the avatars used to represent the poster were also good for a few laughs.

+ Educational. It actually caused me to have to look up a few things just to understand the joke. Personal favorites were the sections dealing with religion and all its influences (Crusades, Joan of Arc etc.), World War II, Classical Western Civilization and the Renaissance.

+ Quick and easy read.

Cons

- Not all of the humor hits the mark.

- Too short. Takes roughly 30-45 minutes to read cover to cover. I wanted more after the book was over. There's so much more of the world's history to parody.

To quote the author, "Ah, Facebook. We all make fun of it, and we're all on it. If the Facebook community --600 million strong-- were a country, it would rank third in population and last in spelling ability." The author isn't afraid to poke fun at even the most serious of situations or establishments. Overstreet is an equal opportunity offender and that's a good thing because we all need to laugh at ourselves from time to time. Perfect for the bus ride home or bedside reading, "The World According to Facebook" is short but sweet and had me snickering with a grin page after page.

Sometimes - Funny is Just what I need.. really funny.

This book is light, witty - and makes you chuckle at the historical allusions. It made me feel smart - and cracked me up at the same time.

This is a book that makes me realize I know more about facebook than I ever would admit - and makes me laugh just the same. It is just the mix between escapism and realism - that I enjoy. I loved reading and I am going to enjoy leafing it in my guest room for my visitors. I know they will be happier for it.

Fun book to read and to own.

This Book Turned My Life Around

When I read this book, I quickly realized that I was a "textbook" case. I had suffered from classic adrenal fatigue since 1989 when I became very exhausted and it never lifted. Then I suffered many related symptoms of adrenal fatigue which Wilson describes so clearly in the book.

I have to say that the first benefit of this book was to realize that here was a doctor who understood me. I wasn't crazy and this is a known syndrome. That, right away, removed 50% of the suffering (which was the psychological component of not knowing what was going on.)

The rest took a while and involved actually implementing the many recommendations Dr. Wilson makes. Warning: It isn't 3-easy steps! If you have adrenal fatigue and want to get well it will take focus and commitment. And Dr. Wilson states that fact directly.

For those who are skeptical about the existence of adrenal fatigue, there is a lab test called the ACTH-Stimulation test which, in my case, positively confirmed the my adrenals were unresponsive to the pituitary signal of ACTH.

The number one key was to make Dr. Wilson's recommended lifestyle changes by changing my apply-more-pressure orientation to life. I had to learn to stop motivating myself through fear, anxiety and pressure and, instead, learn to have more orientation towards the simple pleasures in life. This took away a great deal of the stress which was preventing me from healing my adrenals. There were also many dietary, exercise and sleep changes I had to make.

Next, the nutritional supplement recommendations were tremendously helpful, in particular Siberian ginseng, ashwaganda, and licorice. Here are the two products I used which were formulated according to the author's recommendations in the book itself.

FROM A NURSE: THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR ALL WHO ARE EXHAUSTED AND WANT TO FIND OUT THE CAUSE AND BEST OF ALL, THE SOLUTION

I'm an RN. I can't recommend this book strongly enough. I bought my supplements two weeks ago now and am feeling better already. Dr Wilson has the courage to tell people what their medical doctors won't. I followed his recommendations and in addition to the supplements, wrote out my plan after his writing exercise. That was 2 lists: What makes me feel good (enjoy) and What makes me feel stressed (bad). I did this in just a few minutes thinking I would go back to it later. As I kept reading, the next thing was to arrange the top 5 in each list. For fun, I did it right away. OMG! In each list I had put them almost in the right order.

The next task was to make a plan to increase the good things, situations, etc and decrease the negative. I still work. Unfortunately, the night shift. The on, off biorhythm was/is my biggest enemy. Since my management won't let me change from that shift to either of the other two, I have decreased my available time each month. The benefit of working Per Diem. Unusual but at the facility I work, management only considers per Diem as a one shift thing. I am able to work with the 2nd shift supervisor to pick up extra shifts so I can maintain the hours I need to work each month. This book gave me the impetus to change my situation. I had been "waiting" for over a year for them to hire someone to replace me on the night shift.

Dr Wilson's book should be required reading for every medical person! I have shared with a few co-workers and two have just purchased their own books. And, as an R.N. I can see residents whom I care for who most likely also would benefit from this method. Instead, they are filled with drugs. No, I'm not against drugs but I AM a strong supporter of feeling well. Unfortunately, many times drugs mask what is really going on and the real problem still remains. Therefore, one never REALLY "feels well".

I guess what I'm trying to say is this. When you are caught up in life like a boat without paddles down a raging stream..... Then this is the book for you. dr Wilson's information gave me the oars and the insight how to paddle myself back to calmer waters. One little nugget for me is the following:
I hate naps....with a passion. Now is the past three weeks, I have taken 2 twenty minute "naps". Laying down. He explained why it's better for the adrenal glands. I had always just pushed through. Wow, this and other suggestions, supplements, and life changes have made a difference.

The most difficult is the exercise. I had gotten so bad that I had severe pain located above both kidneys then experienced hot burning on my back every time my back touched a seat, especially when driving. Yup, doctors had no idea! Finally ended up having acupuncture and Dr G. educated me.

Now I love exercise but was so exhausted that it was a chore... As an aside, I work so I can keep my two horses. We had a family emergency and one of our boys has narcolepsy and ended up living with us. Real rough year as many of you who may be reading this. But there is an answer.
Now I finally am a bit better and slowly working some exercise back into my daily routine. My near goal is to be riding like I was two years ago

I wish the best for the thousands of you who have been misdiagnosed. Keep up the faith and heal yourself as I know it can be done.

Very real, read my review if you think it sounds like you,get help..won't go away on its own just gets worse...

Very important information in here. My alternative doctor suggested I might have Adrenal Exhaustion since
several mornings I could not make my body move out of that bed to get ready for work. I thought to myself
what the heck is going on here? Its real folks. Never knew much about the Adrenals before, after reading
most of this book I have been educated. Also have educated my sister who is a Nurse and she has some
of the symptoms too. She never knew what the Adrenals really did. Why aren't the Medical Schools teaching
about the importance of the Adrenals? Most western Medicals Doctors don't have a clue how to treat a person
with Adrenal Fatigue. This disorder can be present also in other members of your family. Several symptoms of
Adrenal Fatigue are feeling freezing cold all the time, feeling overwhelmed by or unable to cope with stress, exhaustiion
or poor recovery after exercise, poor resistance to respiratory infections, difficulty recovering from jet lag or time changes,
carvings for salty foods(like potato chips), difficulty concentrating: brain fog, chronic food or environmental allergies, plus
another fifteen symptoms I cannot list them all here. Just get the book, take of yourself cause it won't go away on its own
just get worse.

About the Author
P. G. Wodehouse (1881–1975) was born in Surrey, educated in London, and spent much of his life in Southampton, Long Island, becoming an American citizen in 1955. In a literary career spanning more than seventy years, he published more than ninety books, twenty film scripts, and collaborated on more than thirty plays and musical comedies.

Pure Gold

Ukridge is P G Wodehouse's greatest creation. Unfairly eclipsed in the public imagination by Jeeves&Wooster, for the simple reason that like Psmith Wodehouse didn't write that much for the character. But what there is, is pure gold and 'Ukridge' is no exception. No one story stands out as they're all mini-masterpieces. Get hold of it as soon as you can, old horse!

Ukridge Romps!

If you haven't met Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge yet, you've missed a treat. I think of Ukridge as a comic character virtually equal to Falstaff.

P.G. Wodehouse based the character on a school friend which adds extra poignancy to the many hilarious tales in this book.

The book has ten chapters, each of which is an entire short story. However, the stories are connected to one another so you have continuing development of characters and plots.

The story is told from the perspective of the long-suffering James Corcoran, an impecunious author who is one of Ukridge's favorite sources of money, clothes, lodgings and all other sorts of accommodations.

Ukridge is a great schemer . . . who doesn't bother to work out all of the details. He's confident that an abundant universe will take care of him. Sometimes he's right and sometimes not.

Most people will be thrilled by Ukridge's career as a boxing manager for Battling Billson, the most mercurial fighter the world has ever know. Three chapters are devoted to that story.

The book opens with a classic Ukridge scheme; he's going to make a mint by training dogs to behave at Ukridge's Dog College.

The second story, Ukridge's Accident Syndicate, shows that even if a scheme works, it may not pay off in the way you expected.

Ukridge tries his hand at being a political surrogate in The Long Arm of Looney Coote, with hilarious consequences.

In First Aid for Dora, Ukridge decides to help Dora recover from having lost her job . . . which she lost because of him. With help like his, one should probably seek out enemies instead! In Ukridge Sees Her Through, Dora gets more "help" from Ukridge.

Ukridge is prone to overstate his position to others. He lives to regret that tendency when it almost leads to unexpected matrimony in No Wedding Bells for Him.

In Ukridge Rounds a Nasty Corner, Ukridge falls in love and has to prove himself worthy of his love's family. Now that's a tough trick!

You can read each of these stories in less than an hour. I suggest spacing them out over time so you can enjoy their flavor longer.

The Big, Broad Flexible Outlook

Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, that enemy of mankind, stars in ten brilliant short stories, all narrated by his long-suffering friend James Corcoran. Ukridge (pronounced "ook-ridge"), moocher of socks, shirts, and fivers, evader of creditors, bane of rich aunts, is another of Wodehouse's many great comic creations. Perhaps the best of these are about his management of soft-hearted fighter Wilberforce "Battling" Billson, but the stories are uniformly excellent and hilarious; full of unpredictable comic twists and the brilliant language and dialogue that make Wodehouse a full-fledged genius.
On the first page of the first story Ukridge offers Corocoran the rights to his life story for a hundred pounds down (quickly reduced to twenty-five). Corcoran, who foolishly lets the opportunity slip, may have lacked the big, broad, flexible outlook in this one instance, but P.G. certainly didn't.
The well-crafted, nice-looking edition is another winner in Everyman's excellent serires.
