About the Author
Simon Gunn is Reader in History in the School of Cultural Studies at Leeds Metropolitan University. He is the author of The Public Culture of the Victorian Middle Class and was historical adviser to the highly praised BBC2 series, Middle Classes, from which he also co-authored the book, published by Cassell, 2002. He has taught at undergraduate and postgraduate levels on the relationship between history and cultural theory, and has published articles on the ideas of theorists including Walter Benjamin, Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault.

Great intro

This book works very well as a guide through the different approaches to history which have been fleshed out over the last couple decades. Gunn provides insight into many of the most influential theorists in a very able synthesis. In places he is, self admittedly, partisan and in others he, in my opinion, short changes some very interesting ideas. However, overall the work is a great touchstone for contemporary theoretical debates within history (or at least the attempts at such a debate). I would caveat this endorsement, though, with the advice that to actually make this book useful, one must follow up on it and go back to the original works. Luckily, I felt spurred on by Gunn's engaging treatment of these complicated topics to do exactly that. In this sense, it acts as the best introductory reference guide to students interested in the theories and philosophies of history that I've run across.

Organic gardens and oil companies do not play well together

I give it 4.5 stars, better than 4, not quite a 5, but a delightful story with a strong woman determined to make a go of an organic gardening farm after her father, a rancher, dies of cancer. Who doesn't love fresh vegetables, but someone does--two of her workers have been threatened and Molly has no idea why.

When she places an ad for another driver, Adam Hollister, applies. He previously was an oil wildcatter and knows how to take a soil sample to verify whether oil is under the ground on Molly's acreage. While he takes the job to gather such samples, he soon begins to rethink that plan as he watches how Molly works to grow her plants and feed so many families unable to make enough to keep food on the table.

Several crises draw these two highly likable characters together, but when Molly learns who he really he, how can Adam convince her he isn't out to take her land from her? Especially if the state threatens to side with the oil company? Read it and be prepared to cheer.
