About the Author
Christian Paetz was born in Chemnitz/East Germany in 1966. He attended a vocational training in electronics before studying Information Technology at the Universities of Dresden and Chemnitz. He received his Masters Degree in 1993 and his Doctors Degree in 1998.After leaving academics in 2000 he founded the company Peppercon AG, awarded as the best startup company in Saxony in that year. With the acquisition of Peppercon by Raritan Inc. New Jersey/USA Christian served the new mother company for several years in different international management positions. In 2012 he was appointed as Professor for Systems Reliability at Chemnitz University. Beside his scientific work he is publishing on different topics in the field of engineering, economics and entrepreneurship, holds 7 patents, serves as board member of several companies and as European speaker of the Z-Wave Alliance.

Poorly written

This book has some good information on the basics of Z Wave, but be forewarned...the English grammar is awkward and the spelling leaves much to be desired. In a single paragraph the author uses "ceiling" and then refers to it as "sealing". Many prepositions throughout the book are wrong or mis-spelled.

The grammar is the worst feature. It is so bad as to be very distracting to the native English reader.

On the technical side it is aimed at developers more than installers or end users of Z Wave technology.it is very general in its descriptions and does not offer much information for the typical installer.

Good basics book but don't expect to learn hardly anything new.

I bought it after easily figuring out z-wave myself and buying numerous z-wave devices. Generally I like to learn this way -- diving in, then after I understand it reading a book to reinforce my knowledge and add on elements and learn it from an academic perspective. However this book was not very different than me dumping the information I found with ease to begin with. I wished for a bit more "ah-ha" moments where they documented some more interesting z-wave findings. That being said 3 stars isn't right -- it should be 3.5, but amazon doesn't allow it.

Don't be fooled by the title

This is a very comprehensive book on z-wave. I have no idea why it's called 'basics', probably one of many spelling errors in the book (it is, as others have noted, pretty horrible). But if you are serious about learning z-wave then this is the most comprehensive book available at the moment. It details the several layers the z-wave protocol has and plenty of good insights into releases of the protocol (SDK's), so for someone only looking for 'basics' it might even be too technical. Then again, the technical parts can be easily skipped.

I would have given it a five star rating if it had less errors (spelling, references, table sub lines, etc) and would have handled/explained some technicalities in a way more accessible to novice users. E.g. One has to be fairly technical to understand "In a conductive load the capacitive reactance exceeds the inductive reactance. Hence the load draws a leading current."

The book covers everything you need to know, the z-wave basics, how to build a reliable network, to side information like how dimmers work and how to handle those in your home automation setup.

His career spans over 35 years in the rubber and plastics processing industry in Europe, the US and Canada, mainly in R&D with senior and executive responsibilities. Currently, he is President of Drobny Polymer Associates an international consulting firm specialising in fluoropolymer science and technology, radiation processing and elastomer technology. Active as an educator, lecturer, author, and as technical and scientific translator. He is member of the Society of Plastic Engineers, American Chemical Society and SAMPE and is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Plastics and Polymers, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East. He resides in New Hampshire.

The text suggests a range of possible destinations, along with the refrain, Well, a Leaf Man's got to go where the wind blows. Finally, readers are encouraged to listen for a rustle in the leaves and maybe find a Leaf Man of their own to take home. From ducks to pumpkins to fish, all of the objects described are fashioned out of life-size leaves of various shapes, sizes, and hues and set against backgrounds of textured paper. The die-cut pages curve and bend across the top edge, suggesting undulating mountains set against a sky-blue backdrop. The various leaves and seeds are identified on the endpapers. She uses them--gathered from oaks, hawthorns, elms, beeches, and more--to great affect here, cleverly shaping them into the many animals and objects the leaf flies over: chickens, fruits and vegetables and lakes, fish, and rivers. Hints of whimsy are cleverly incorporated in the figures (the tips of a maple leaf form a cow's udder), and scalloped edgings on the tops of the pages, cut at varying heights, artfully give the effect of setting the action against a three-dimensional landscape. There is no real story here, but the book can easily translate into a guessing game, as young eyes pick out the slightly camouflaged shapes. The bright colors and distinctive shapes will make it a pleasure for children to do just that. Ilene Cooper

What fun! So much to see!

This book is getting good reviews for good reason. Lois Ehlert uses images of actual autumn leaves to tell a simple story. And yet, it's not that simple. In each colorful double-page spread, the leaves are arranged in order to form figures: a man, barnyard animals, farm crops, etc., whatever supports the text. As we advance through the story, we realize something different about the book. The top edges of the pages aren't cut straight; they swoop to become horizon lines that change with each page turn, simulating the colorful rolling hills of autumn. What a wonderful surprise! Who would have thought of that technique? It's perfect for the story. The leaves are close at hand, and yet your eye catches the distant landscape, just as it might in real life.

What I like most about this book is that it is educational in a subtle way. It doesn't scream, "Here are leaf projects for you to try!" It merely tells a story using leaves, and lets the readers become inspired to gather up and create leaf creatures of their own. In other words, teaching and leading by example. On the end-sheet of the front and back covers, sample leaves are each identified by tree name -- again, with subtlety. If you want to know the names of the trees they came from, fine, there they are. If you are too young (or too old!) to care, then the words do not intrude on your view of the leaves or the enjoyment of the book. I can see that reading this book to a group of observant youngsters would take quite a while. There's so much to see, and you might not catch it all the first time through. "Leaf Man" requires multiple readings.

This is a beautiful, educational picture book that will appeal to all ages. It should be mandatory for nature center libraries and elementary school libraries.

About the Author

Barry Blake has been teaching students about language for almost four decades. He is now Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at La Trobe University. With R. M. W. Dixon he co-edited five volumes of the Handbook of Australian Languages (Benjamins 1979, 1981, 1983; OUP 1991, 2000). His many outstanding books include Case (second edition CUP 2001), Relational Grammar (Routledge 1990), as well as several foundational works on Australian Aboriginal languages.

I wish I had it as a textbook in high school English class. It is so much more worth than what I learned then. Or does it take so many years to reflect on what you use every day and take for granted? I couldn't put the book down!
