Dated, but still an excellent introduction

The book has a simple two-part message. The first half is a discussion of the idea of luck versus chance, with illustrations mostly from gambling games. This is a deeper issue than many people (including people well-versed in the quantitative theory of probability) realize. It also happens to be one that troubles a lot of intelligent people who are not comfortable with Statistics, despite repeated attempts to learn the subject. I don't know of any other extended discussion of this quality done at an elementary level anyone can follow.

The second half does a similarly thorough job of moving from the mathematics of probability to the practice of statistics. The examples are drawn from everyday life or current events. This is statistics as it should be taught, as a method of reasoning grounded in probability theory and careful consideration of data, rather than a cookbook of computer commands or bunch of theorems. A lot of books try to do this, but many academically-trained statisticians lack the long practical experience and effortless mastery this author brings to the table (he had the advantage of learning Statistics before that required years of advanced pure mathematics).

Unfortunately, the book is dated without significant alteration from the 1939 version. The examples seem old-fashioned, and some may not even be comprehensible to younger readers. As Rudolf Dankwort noted, it does not cover game theory, and its advice on poker is probabilistic only. It also does not cover nonparametric statistics, Bayesian methods or computers.

Therefore, I recommend this book mostly as an antidote to a bad statistics education for intelligent people. It will gently lay the groundwork you may have missed, so that the things you did learn will make more sense. It could also be used as a primer so that you can attack a conventional statistics book with a more solid foundation.

very elementary my dear watson ...

This is a very ellementary, almost jejune text. It is strictly for the non-mathematical & even non-logical! very few equations & full of obvious observations. Furthermore, it was originally written in 1939, before the advent of game theory, which it painfully lacks. The chapters on poker are also more or less useless since the element of bluffing is almost ignored. Game thoery books are a lot more fun. But for the totally unscientific (in fact, for those with a distinctly superstitious bent), this book may well be worthwhile, like some of Sagan's general-reader stuff.

Biased Biography with Ulterior Motives

Though extensive and seemingly exhaustive in its details and depth of research, almost half of the 600 pages is devoted to hammering it into our heads the fact that Coco Chanel was a fascist Nazi sympathizer. Garelick attempts to subtly separate Coco Chanel the fascist woman from Chanel the powerhouse fashion brand of today, so as not to offend the current owners nor damage their profits in any way.
The author easily glosses over the fact that Coco had to gain the favor of the Nazis in order to rescue her nephew (or most likely son), who was dying in Nazi captivity and whom she loved dearly. The author quickly glosses over the fact that the Wertheimers royally screwed Coco by setting up their own, separate Chanel corporation in America during the war, and profited enormously from perfume sales, all the while sharing none of it with the woman herself.
The first thing Garelick does is insinuate that the interlocking C logo is a fascist symbol much like the swastika, and how Coco's own fascist tendencies enabled her fashion brand to dominate. There are a good twenty pages or so where the author lectures the reader on fascism and the evils of the German Nazis. It is repetitive, completely unnecessary, and only serves Garelick's purpose in imprinting a very negative image of Coco in the readers' minds. Many of those who were wealthy or had much to lose during the war were Nazi sympathizers, including the British royal family and almost everyone in the upper echelons of European society, but the particularly harsh focus of the author on Coco, as well as Garelick's own personal insinuations (which she weaves in many paragraphs stealthily) on Coco’s thoughts or motives, are just plain annoying.
The real motive of this biography is to shame, denigrate, and disparage Coco Chanel the woman, while simultaneously praising and building respect for the house of Chanel under the Wertheimer ownership. I do not recommend this book, and feel that it portrays a very strong woman who overcame incredible tragedies and obstacles in a purposefully negative light. It is not an unbiased, objective biography.

Unexpectedly, a page-turner!

I thought I knew this story; as they say, 'I saw the movie...' But I didn't know the half of it. Reading on, I found myself staying up later and later, dying to know what Coco would do next. I was particularly struck by Garelick's meticulous research -- her apt contextualizing of historical events and convincing use of new information about Gabrielle Chanel's friends, to show how they affected the haute-couture designer's constantly-evolving, increasingly mercurial persona. The last third of the book makes for disturbing reading. We watch Chanel as her dynamic charisma becomes manic grandiosity and she slips into sadistic madness without, apparently, losing her innate creative genius. She may not have been lovable (though many loved her) but Coco Chanel is an utterly unforgettable character -- the perfect heroine for a vampire movie. Without revealing any of the book's dramatic surprises, let me particularly recommend the passage where she spends several hours alone with the corpse of her ambivalently-loved friend Misia Natanson-Edwards-Sert. One thought -- I read the book on my paper-white Kindle, which cannot do justice to its many illustrations. The images are important to understanding the character, who in her own way was a visual artist. If you can, buy the physical book.

Tediously Thorough

Extremely well researched and minutely detailed in seemingly every aspect of Chanel's life. I began to find it tedious by only one-third finished, even though I have read many lengthier biographies. My loss of interest is not as much the fault of the author's as my previous ignorance of Chanel's extreme Nazi leanings that completely disenchanted me from learning more about her and will forever keep me from purchasing or using her empire's products.

Required reading for adults

Painfully thought provoking...intense.

This is a MUST READ for current and future therapists.

An End to Innocence is for those who love to ask "why", the introspective, and anyone who wants to grow. If you are looking for a feel good read, wanting to escape reality in some way, or are looking for some sort of validation in relation to either, this may not be the best read for you.

An End to Innocence encouraged me to look within, and ironically, in some ways, to stop looking within (at least not so hard).

Realizing that there is no inherent meaning in life, and that it must be created on your own, is both lonely and scary, but enlightening beyond any words I could write here.

A Helpful Introduction to Christian Liturgy

Somehow Pastor Frank Senn has achieved paradoxical unity in the writing his newest work. The book reads like a wide ranging historical and liturgical handbook in a question and answer format. Yet at the same time the book provides the depth of an encyclopedia explaining the liturgy across most of Christendom. That is the beauty of what Senn has written. Though he is a Lutheran pastor, the book remains ecumenical in nature and helpful no matter the reader's Christian heritage. An example of this is how Senn explains why some denominations may not seem liturgical but most are in their own way. Because of this, he sometimes also explains the workings of Pentecostal and Charismatic worship services.

Perhaps the one drawback to the book for me is the author's emphasis on the word liturgy. Pr. Senn is careful to bring out the word's Greek grammatical history of liturgy/leitourgia as a citizen's public works project and as such liturgy is very much a work of the people. Pr. Senn, however, could do more to explain in greater detail how liturgy has also historically been understood in the order of God's service/work to us. It is God's Divine Service to us, revealing Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and the other sacraments. In liturgy heaven is open on earth. As Pr. Senn did write, "God is at work in, with, and through the liturgy" (p. 13.)

Otherwise, this is a well-balanced text suitable for many levels of classes and uses. It's easily arranged by topic and also includes an historical time line of liturgical developments along with an 8 page glossary of liturgical terms.

Helpful, Eccumenical approach to Liturgy

Why do we Worship? What is Liturgy? What are the main periods of liturgical history? What characterizes liturgy in each of these periods? What does it mean to sanctify time? How is liturgical space arranged? How is the body used in worship? How are children formed in Christian worship?

These are just some of the questions which Frank Senn answers in Introduction to Christian Liturgy. In this book he describes, catalogues and commends a thoughtful appropriation of liturgical practices in worship. This is a solid introduction to liturgy and covers topics like: what liturgy is, history and culture (and how liturgy inculturates), the order of service, the liturgy of hours, the church calender and the history and meaning of various seasons, life passages, liturgical arts, and how congregants participate in worship. While Senn himself is a Lutheran pastor and liturgist, his approach is ecumenical. He is able to synthesize the insights of liturgists and scholars from various traditions (i.e. Schmemann, Wainwright, Lathrop, White, Bradshaw, etc.) and he surveys liturgical traditions from the Orthodox to the Vineyard movement.

This is a very good book for anyone interested in liturgy. In each of the chapters (which explore the topics listed above), Senn answers a series of questions. This makes this book a quick reference for the various elements of liturgy. Senn calls his book a `pastoral liturgical handbook' and envisions that this book will be most useful to pastoral leaders by making them knowledgeable of the liturgical tradition and enabling them to answer specific questions lay people may have (1-2). His contention is that pastors who are knowledgeable of the history and trends can help shape the liturgy for a particular context in a way that is congregationally and culturally sensitive. He does not articulate a `one-size-fits-all' approach to Christian liturgy, but commends to you the rich resources of the Christian tradition.

Three groups will find this book helpful. As Senn envisions, this book will be helpful to pastoral leaders and other worship leaders as a resource on liturgy. It will help pastors answer questions about the liturgy and help them lead congregants into the significance of various rituals and ceremonies. Secondly, this book will be well used in an academic context. The comprehensive way in which Senn addresses the various pieces of Christian liturgy makes it an ideal text for courses on liturgy and worship. I would have loved a text like this in seminary which described the various elements of worship in various traditions. Third, the educated lay person will also find this book helpful. The question-and-answer organization to this book, makes it a quick and accessible resource. This is the sort of reference book which is great addition to a personal or church library.

My own ecclesiastical tradition is not directly named in this text. The church I attend is not particularly `high church.' We have a worship team and don't often follow the Lectionary but we do have some liturgical features we hold dear. We celebrate weekly communion, observe the Christian seasons and our pastor will `robe up' to perform baptisms and dedications (significant life events). This liturgical `hodge podge' is due to the fact that my denomination, the Evangelical Covenant Church retains some of the traditional elements from their Swedish Lutheran roots, but their churches also bear the influence of revivalism. Senn names and describes both of these influences and there is a lot here that would be applicable to my context. Likewise, Christians from a wide swath of Christian traditions will also find various entry points into this subject matter.

I am happy to recommend this book to students, pastors, worship leaders and any one interested in liturgical practice. This is an `introduction' so does not say all that needs to be said about liturgy, but Senn points readers to other resources at the end of each chapter, so that they may deepen their liturgical understanding. Senn does what any good guide does and names the flora and fauna of the terrain he traverses and points the way for those who wish to explore further. I give this book five star: ★★★★★

This series is just getting better and better!

This series is like a drug and I’m more than happy to take my share of it!
Contagious Chaos continues Orissa’s story about surviving the zombie apocalypse. There is more action and hardship than the first two making it hard for me to put down because I had to know what happened next all the time.
I think I finished this all in one day and I almost got my phone taken away many times because I had to be reading this book. Not that many books do that for me (let alone series) but when they do I recommend it to everyone!
This is a series I will always recommend over most!

Another great book in the Contagium Series.

Contagious Chaos continues the wild ride that Emily stated in Contagious. Things get really intense in book three as things start to come together. Lots of gore! Lots of action! and Lots of gummies! Orissa has come a long way since the selfish party girl she was in the first book. Now she has people she cares about and a new place to call home. Her new commitments make a world infested with zombies that much scarier. I can't wait until the final book in the series releases next month so that I know what comes next.

It's safe to say that this book will definitely live up to the high expectations of Emily Goodwin's fans! It is full to the brim with blood, gore, and slime! Zombies, intrigue, nail-biting stress, with just a dash of romance; the very definition of a book in perfect balance.

Good resource

Lagers are a difficult style: the most authentic producers don't bother importing to the US. The Americans that emulate the Pilsners Marzens and Helles won't ever hone in on those beautiful malty flavors.

Lagers are hard to do because maltiness is hard to capture. Once you have one though, preferably for longer than a 3 day binge in Germany, you start to realize what you're missing.

I don't think this resource can give you everything you need, but its certainly a start in the right direction. As a brewer, you won't be able to go completely down this road without the help of someONE- not a text, because the best trade techniques are not written but passed down.

More scientific explanations of the brewing process, and a good book for any brewer to own. Many books give too cursory of an brewing explanation, and while this may be a bit too detailed -- it is a great companion to Gordon Strong's Brewing Better Beer.

If you've read Papazian and Palmer already, this may be the next logical choice. Far more technically oriented than the other two, Noonan lays out the plan for decoction mashing after going in-depth with malt, water chemistry and treatment, yeast and fermentation. While the chapter with step-by-step instructions for decoction mashing is the clearest and most direct I've read, the book as a whole is a fantastic reference for brewing techniques in general and lager techniques in particular. A staple of any good brewing library.
