About the Author
Johnny Cash (1932-2003) was an American icon and country music superstar, a professed man of faith, as well as the author of three books. Cash first sang publicly while in the air force in the early fifties. The youngest person ever chosen for the Country Music Hall of Fame, he was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and awarded eleven Grammies in a career that spanned generations. Married to country legend June Carter, Cash performed everywhere from Folsom Prison to the White House, hosted his own television show, appeared in feature films, and in 1996 received the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award.

I See a Darkness

For whatever reason, "American III: Solitary Man" is the only album in the American series that had a corresponding songbook published (excluding "My Mother's Hymnbook"). While a great album on its own, as the only transcribed representation of the entire series, "American III" is a bit lacking. In the song list we find no dark humor as contained in "Delia's Gone" and "The Man Who Couldn't Cry," nor the raw power of "Rusty Cage" and "Hurt." All that being said, though, this book still has a lot to offer. (UPDATE: Johnny Cash - American V: A Hundred Highways is also available.)

First off, the arrangement of "I See a Darkness" alone is worth the price of the book. Simple and beautiful, Will Oldham's words and music are haunting. Another notable arrangement is of the gospel standard "Wayfaring Stranger." Of all the versions I've come across, this is definitely my favorite.

The arrangement for "The Mercy Seat" is a bit of a disappointment, mainly because of it's oversimplification. The recording of this song has some of that "raw power" that I mentioned, but it just doesn't translate well in written form. I understand, though, how this kind of song would be difficult to pen for a lone piano or guitar.

Another song that doesn't quite capture the recording is "One." It's a bit awkward as it incorporates the melody. This and "Solitary Man" would have worked better as accompaniment arrangements.

"Nobody," "Field of Diamonds," and "Country Trash" are other songs that are very simple, but a lot of fun to play and to sing along with.

The verdict: For all piano- or guitar-playing fans of the American series, I would definitely recommend this songbook, but don't have too high an expectation.

Good source for the Latin

It is helpful to have an inexpensive edition of the Latin Meditations. The painfully literal English "translation" that accompanies it in this volume may serve as a handy vocabulary crib, but by itself is unreadable-- although generally reliable. Curiously, even the translator's own introduction does not reveal a more comfortable writing style: sentences grow into paragraphs, and paragraphs swell into pages. Parenthetical expressions are occasionally embedded three-deep, and the subject matter vacillates between textual trivia and attempts at profundity.
Unusable as an undergraduate text, but thanks for the Latin!

Be careful!

Be Careful! This is NOT the translation described in the Amazon reviews. It is a the unreadable one by Heffernan. This edition is useful only for its Latin text. The facing English can be used as an aid to the reader, but is often so stiff and convoluted as to be unreadable as English. The fifty-page introduction is full of trivia and misinterpretations. The volume is quite justifiably out of print!

bilingual edition of a seminal work

Descartes's _Meditations_ were his greatest work and this edition allows the assiduous student to read it in the original Latin. His ideas are not often accepted wholesale today, and to our modern and postmodern ears they might sound crude and naive. Nevertheless, Descartes's role as an originator of argumentative style and discourse is of gargantuan importance to the development of early modern philosophy. A great book.
