Portrait of a disfunctional marriage

My first experience with Allison Lane (The Beleaguered Earl) was a disappointment for the book was so full of flaws that I was reluctant to try again. I am pleased to say that I was very much surprised with The Rake's Rainbow and recommend it highly.
The story of The Hon Thomas Mannering and Miss Caroline Cummings is not an easy read. If you like your regencies lite 'n' fluffy, then this book is not for you. It is dark, distressing and depressing but, ultimately, full of hope and triumph against what seem to be pretty overwhelming odds.
Thomas and Caroline marry in order to escape - for her poverty and governessing and for him in order to gain an inheritance. Thomas had become ensnared by Alicia - a heartless, fickle nymphomaniac who strings him along never intending to marry an earl's mere second son. He slips into a deep depression, drinking and gambling and nearly slipping over the edge into madness.
Caroline is the stronger of the two for, with astute insight into human nature, she is able to save him by letting matters run their course, never giving up hope that the man she sees beneath the hopeless despair is worth nurturing and loving. Some might say she is a bit of a sacrificial lamb but, within the social context of the times, she did what she had to in times when divorce was virtually impossible. The descriptions of her meeting Thomas's family for the first time and finding her way through the Season were excellent for she does it without the support of her husband who, by this time, is so depressed that he ignores her completely.
I liked the way the author developed Thomas's family; each member, particularly his father, the Earl of Marchgate and his foppish but sweet elder brother, had a significant role to play in the development of the story.
There is a great deal of pain, angst and high emotion in this story. Tempers flare, characters sometimes act against their own best intentions and the hero is flawed but honourable. The heroine is strong but tender and loving. Sometimes the reader will want to point a pistol at Thomas and at others will want to love him - for this story is a real emotional roller coaster.
I will read another of Allison Lane's books to see if my first experience was atypical. It's just too bad she did not meet in The Beleaguered Earl the exceptionally high standards that she set with The Rake's Rainbow. It was very well done; polished prose and obvious careful research gives it a very authentic air. Her depiction of the Season, the Ton and marriage and family life in the Regency era were very good and most realistic.

This hero is NO hero

The "hero": selfish, mean, cheater, weak in character, whiny, self-pity (why is my life so bad, woe is me - let me abuse someone else because I'm too lazy and selfish to care of my own life).

The heroine - liked her for the most part but she put up with his abuse (verbal and emotional) and then when he did have his about-face she made it too easy on him. She didn't require he do anything to atone for his abuse of her.

Heroine is too good for undeserving hero

Mannering, the novel's supposed hero, is so unappealing and thickheaded that it defies even romance novel logic that are spunky heroine should fall in love with him. Mannering spends the entire novel in love with another woman and treats the loveable heroine, who is his wife, so badly that you actually hope the author kills him so our heroine could find a worthy mate. Not a noteworthy book.

What a great way to get to know Paul and his companions. This book keeps your attention and at the same time you learn the personalities of Paul, Peter, Silas and others! After reading this and the other diaries, go back and read the actual letters to the churches in the Bible. They will come alive! A Great Book!

Excellent way to add to our understanding of the times.

Excellent way to add to our understanding of the times, Gene Edwards is a excellent story teller and I have read many of his books, he doesn't state this is how it was but how it could have been. As he says this is not for studying the Bible but has helped me putting a greater understanding to the times and culture, I do highly recommend this book as I would for all of his books I have read so far.

Captivating

Gene Edwards is a master writer. He has studied and prayed over this and produced a masterpiece. You feel like you are there with Timothy in that first century. It is fiction but based on actual accounts from the Bible and other places and makes the life of Timothy come alive like never before. Incredible!

Beautiful missal for a beautiful Mass

If you go to the traditional Mass (or are thinking about it), then this little leaflet missal is for you. It has all you need to follow the beautiful Tridentine Mass. But, it has much more than just the words of the Mass in Latin and English; it has some of the most beautiful prayers for before and after Mass, including the well-known prayers of St. Ambrose and St. Thomas Aquinas.
The missal also has instructions for confession, short meditations on the mysteries of the Rosary, and music for the Mass of the Angels. Not to mention beautiful artwork on the cover and throughout the missal.
Even if you've never been to a traditional Mass, you will probably find this little missal most helpful. In the margins there are brief explanations of the meaning of each prayer or its origins. If you've never been to a traditional Mass, this little Missal just might convince you to go.

Same missal handed out during many Tridentine Masses

Houstonians: This is a slightly larger version of the same missal handed out for the Tridentine Masses at Annunciation Catholic Church in Houston, TX.
I've heard it's commonly in use elsewhere around the country as well.
It's very nice to have my own copy for studying at home. I highly recommend anyone considering buying a copy to do so.

Excellent Latin Mass Booklet

This is an excellent booklet for following the traditional Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in latin. It also contains many prayers and an Examine of Conscience. It even has the music for the Mass of the Angels (Missa de Angelis). If you don't have a Missal, this is what you should use.

A superb summary of Jungian psychology

This is an indispensable book for anyone beginning their studies in Jungian psychology. At 140 pages in length, the text is an easy read with no wasted words and no convoluted passages to unravel. It addresses Jung's entire system and provides succinct, memorable summaries of each concept.

The Book is broken up into seven chapters:
1. Carl Gustav Jung (biographical background)
2. The Structure of Personality (the psyche, conscious, personal unconscious and collective unconscious)
3. The Dynamics of Personality (psychic energy and values, the principles of equivalence and entropy, etc.)

Excellent introduction to C.G. Jung

"The Primer of Jungian Psychology" is an excellent start for any one curious about who Carl Gustav Jung was and his theories/concepts of the human psyche. It is a well-written, easy-to-read (though some of his concepts may take some time to wrap your brain around; don't let that deter you) book that gives the reader enough explanation of Jungian Psychology without drowning the reader in a purely academic treatise and detail.
If you don't know C.G. Jung or are unsure about his contributions and work, start with this book and decide from there.

About the Author
Glenn Bowdin is Head of the UK Centre for Events Management, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK.

Johnny Allen is Foundation Director of the Australian Centre for Event Management, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia.

William O'Toole is an international events development specialist. He assists councils, cities, regions, countries and companies to grow their events portfolio and create their long term events program. For last five years he advised the Supreme Commission for Tourism in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the development of their new festival program in the thirteen provinces. Bill trains and assists the United Nations event organisers in places such as the Sudan and Uganda and is facilitating the development of the event industry in Kenya. He is a founding director of the Event Management Body of Knowledge and key advisor to the International Event Management Competency Standard.. He has two international event textbooks released and the information and checklists on his CDROM ELMS (www.epms.net), are used by events and venues around the world to manage their events.

Rob Harris is Director of the Australian Centre for Event Management and Senior Lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia.

A well-written book that elaborates the knowledge of events management from diverse perspectives. However, it is a big book more than 700 pages. I wish I could have purchased the kindle version.
