What if Jesus suddenly appeared on the streets of your own city? This is the premise of Jesus Is Here, Charles M. Sheldon's sequel to his classic novel In His Steps, the book that introduced the slogan, "What Would Jesus Do?"
Years ago, members of the First Church of Raymond pledged to consider "What would Jesus do?" before taking any action, however large or small. Now, the Reverend Henry Maxwell and his congregation find themselves delving even deeper into the Christian life--by experiencing the very presence of Jesus in their midst. Jesus Is Here is a challenging, thought-provoking story, a reminder that the story of Jesus did not end on a cross two millennia ago but continues today. Join the church members of Raymond as they learn that Jesus is alive, here and now.

In hard times, it is easy to believe that Jesus hs taken a break! But this book clearly helps you to see that even in the darkest days that Jesus is here. He laughs iwth you and cries with you, and comforts you. If you want to clearly learn to see Jesus in every moment of your life, read this book.

If You Liked In His Steps, This Will Massively Disappoint You
By D. E. Dickerson
While it's billed as a "sequel" to the classic In His Steps, this book contains all the same characters and almost nothing else. On top of which it is practically unreadable.
Short version: Jesus returns to earth and starts walking around being a perfect example of holiness. Precisely because of Sheldon's devoutness, Jesus is scarcely a character at all: we never hear a single word he says, and everything he does is reported to us secondhand by someone else. ("Charles! You missed it! Jesus just gave the most amazing sermon about world peace!"--that sort of thing.) So whereas in the original novel, the characters in the town of Raymond each had individual challenges to face and choices to make, here they simply comment to each other on the latest thing Jesus is doing. And what's really odd is that Jesus doesn't even do very much: no healings, no miracles, and as I just pointed out, although he preaches, you never hear what he actually says. By the time he meets the President and then vanishes, you realize that nothing has even happened. There's no plot, no tension, and it actually violates everything people liked about the first book. (What if you had a "sequel" to The Godfather where all the gangsters simply talked to each other while a giant monster walked around Chicago doing non-gangster-related things? It feels just like that.)
If you want a decent sequel to In His Steps, you have options: What Would Jesus Do? by Glenn Clark (1950) (which is also set in Raymond and uses the grandchildren of the original characters), In His Steps Today by Marti Hefley (1976), and--probably the most likely to appeal to the average evangelical today--In His Steps Again by David Heeren (2010). But avoid, avoid, avoid this bafflingly tedious book. I can only recommend it to obsessive completists like myself. I'm afraid it contains no actual reading pleasure, and even sullies the joy of the original.

could use a re-write
By spfdgreg
This novel, while not terrible, has some real problems. First is theological. When Jesus returns, He won't be slipping in unannounced as an ordinary person, He will come very visibly, and as the sovereign Judge of the world. Second, Sheldon's Jesus seems to be concerned with only two issues--eucumenism, and prohibition of alcohol [He is also said to have given a sermon denouncing Wall Street, but exactly what He said about it we are never told]. Since churches, even back then, didn't even preach the same gospel, how can they all be expected to unite into one big church? Sheldon's Jesus never says anything negative about the church, in contrast to the Jesus of Revelation 2-3, who had some serious complaints about those churches! Speaking of the Gospel, nowhere in this book is there a real presentation of the Gospel. Another thing which bothered me was that everyone referred to Him as "Jesus", never as He ought to be called/addressed--"Lord".
As pointed out in another review, this work also has real problems as a novel. The plot is lame, certain elements are never explained (ie, the astronomical phenomena at the start, and the inability of anyone to take a photograph of Jesus), and the characters are poorly developed; we are told that they change, but seldom shown how and why they change. They are like line drawings, not full-color, 3-D portraits.
This novel is an example of what happens when non-novelists try to write novels.
