Strait Is The Gate, by Andre Gide

This is a classic novel written by French writer Gide. It is a pure and tragic story of love containing boundless and infinite bitterness and solitude. Jerome and his cousin Alyssa were good childhood playmates and share much in common. The two are self-disciplined and take the other as their sole guide, trying to climb a narrow path to reach the peak of virtue. However, Alyssa is doubtful of the ingredients of earthly love and happiness, so she refuses them. To allow her love to reach the great realm of heaven, and get better things than ordinary happiness brought about by love, she makes her own decision.

Like being punched in the gut...in a good way
By A Customer
Before reading Strait is the Gate, I already considered Gide one of my favorite writers. Now, I am dedicated to reading all of his work.
Strait is the Gate hit me so hard with the agony of its characters that I felt pysically ill as the novel went on. Like Gide scholars say, the book is the counterpart to The Immoralist. While in The Immoralist, Gide portrays hedonism taken to an extreme, in Strait is the Gate, he takes self sacrifice to its heart-tearing conclusion.
The story's main characters, cousins Jerome and Alissa, grow up together reading poetry aloud in the gardens of their home. They fall in love with each other--both out of admiration for the other's religious devotion. However, they are kept apart for long periods of time and their love's fervor is lost entirely to religion.
While reading the story as told by Jerome, I can't help but want to scream out "don't just sit there--do something!" But it ends up being too late, and the helpless feeling of the characters--in being unable to regain what they were once on the brink of--hurts us as we read of its effects on Jerome and Alissa.
Not only is the content of the story meaningful, but the style is smooth and image-conjuring (at least in the Dorothy Bussy translation). This is a change from what I experienced in the first pages of the Dover Thrift Edition of The Immoralist (but don't let that keep you from The Immoralist!) Instead, Strait is the Gate is nearly as clean and clear as Justin O'Brien's translation of The Stranger by Camus.
I give the book 5 stars--quite easily. About Gide's other work...
I find "The Return of the Prodigal Son" to be absolutely brilliant. In his retelling of the bible story, Gide describes the feelings of the atheist towards God (to Gide "God" was not a creator, but the goal of humanity), the church, religious friends and family, and to other religious questioners. His story is so touchingly honest and subtle that I cannot read or even think of the end without tears coming to my eyes.
Five stars for all of Gide's stuff.

beautiful book
By PuppyTalk
I read this book long long ago when I was 15 or so. It was one of the first real literary works I have ever read, and, at that age, the purity in human relationship which this story pursuits came through naturally for me (getting ideas about human relationship through this book was definitely better than through tabloids or crappy magazines or romance novels or Hollywood movies!). I have never cried or suffered over a relationship, and been happily married for 25 yrs now.

In the Afterward in the edition I have read, the translator explained that the story reflects Gide's own marriage, or the relationship with his wife. Gide loved his wife dearly, but they hardly had a sexual relationship, or something to that effect, and throughout their marriage, Gide was tormented.

To me, at age 15, the idea, the kind of love that Alissa was looking for -- "divine" and on a higher plane, spiritual than physical, intangible than tangible, and eternal and true -- was quite attractive. It may look unhealthy, but you don't read a story and take it literally. It is a story of Gide's thoughts and ideals, not the story of literal facts. You don't really live your ideal, but to keep that ideal in your mind while you live your daily life is a great way to live.

This book's ideal doesn't go with today's trend or culture, and it is hard to understand. But I think Gide's endeaver was well worth it. It's a very good book to read, especially for young people. It will take you to a -- if not a higher plane, a different realm, and you will see love and relationship from a totally different angle.

Sensitive Soul Selects Self-Sacrifice
By Bob Newman
You can bet that old Omar Khayyam loved a few women in his day and when he got out there under the spreading bough with his loaf of bread, a book of verse, and a jug of wine, he did not fail to eat, drink, recite, and all the rest. That's what I think life is about. Dreams are central, but if you have a chance to realize your dream, and you don't because you think you'll be happier if you don't, then your dreams are just so much junk and you are kidding yourself. Self-denial may be good for your health, but not for your soul.

Andre Gide wrote this novel back before World War I, when extreme sensibility had not been crushed by the horrors of modern war; a time when the words `holocaust' or `genocide' had not been much heard. I am not claiming that this is a bad novel---no, on the contrary---it is a very complex and finely-crafted piece of literature. However, I found it impossible to like. Jerome and Alissa, two extremely sensitive and religious young people in Normandy, fall in love early in life, but spend the rest of the novel avoiding each other, sacrificing themselves for `purity', turning to God instead of to each other, embarassed by their own passion, and other vain exercises in psychological self-mutilation. The twists and turns that Gide manages to write into this short, but extremely complex novel are breathtakingly clever and believable, but the whole effect was to make me feel somewhat nauseous and exceedingly disturbed. Alissa writes to her lover who thinks only of her, "No, don't cut short your journey for the sake of a few days' meeting. Seriously, it is better that we should not see each other again just yet. Believe me, I could not think of you more if you were with me. I should be sorry to give you pain, but I have come to the point of no longer wanting your presence---now. Shall I confess ? If I knew you were coming this evening I should fly away." And so it goes, desire, rejection, reunion, the heights of platonic passion, and again separation. A second love story underlines the first to give it the traceries of poignancy. Some years ago in Australia, there was a campaign to get people away from their television sets, out to do some healthier activity. The slogan then was "Life ! Be in it !" This couple's slogan is definitely, "Life ! Be out of it !"

If you have read Kafka's "The Castle" and enjoyed it, then this book is definitely for you. If you ever thrilled to Ring Lardner's "The Ecstasy of Owen Muir" or Kawabata Yasunari's "House of Sleeping Beauties", then I suppose you will be drawn to STRAIT IS THE GATE. I am not an expert on Gide by any means, but it may be that he wanted to write several books showing the complex depths of various human emotions. It's five star writing, but in the opinion of this reviewer, it is a twisted book that will not give you much pleasure.

Review
"This edition is absolutely essential for any serious student or teacher of this perpetually intriguing and vexing play." (Peter G. Platt Studies in English Literature 48.2 (Spring 2008) )

"Michael Keefer's revised edition of Marlowe's Doctor Faustus is now all the more an indispensable text for students, teachers, and scholars of early modern English drama. It combines immense learning with perfect clarity and accessibility. It gives us a solidly reconceived text and also a brilliant historical introduction that fills each line of this strange and moving play with the sounds of a world in intellectual and religious crisis." One of the most durable myths in Western culture, the story of Faust tells of a learned German doctor who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge and power. Early enactments of Faust's damnation were often the raffish fare of clowns and low comedians. But the young Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593) recognized in the story of Faust's temptation and fall the elements of tragedy.
In his epic treatment of the Faust legend, Marlowe retains much of the rich phantasmagoria of its origins. There are florid visions of an enraged Lucifer, dueling angels, the Seven Deadly Sins, Faustus tormenting the Pope, and his summoning of the spirit of Alexander the Great. But the playwright created equally powerful scenes that invest the work with tragic dignity, among them the doomed man's calling upon Christ to save him and his ultimate rejection of salvation for the embrace of Helen of Troy.

Good read
By Heulwen Foulkes
Two reason I got this book, saw a documentary that claimed he wrote Shakespeare plays and I wanted to read one of the original "Dr. Faustus" plays (as I'm a big fan of Goethe).

The documentary went that Marlowe faked his death, ran to Italy, wrote Shakespeare plays and Shakespeare ran the plays and theater, while he was in exile. I was upset that the documentary didn't have any comparison of the two writers writing, so I thought I would read Marlowe to get my own perspective on it.

There could be two different writers, no comparison at all. Marlowe is masculine, full of a bold energy and a bit Juvenile (Tamburlaine was more about name calling than any real substance) and simplistic plays compared to Shakespeare (there was a bit a surreal or Samuel Becket's "Waiting for Godot" in it though (could have been me)). Shakespeare was a feminine, romantic, a words smith and more complex play structures.

There is no comparison of Goethe's "Faust" and Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus". Goethe's is just a sublime, magical, brilliant work of literature and leaves Marlowe in the dust. Though, Marlowe does hold a lot of inventions in the play and it isn't in anyway bad.

For me, he isn't anyway near Goethe nor Shakespeare but then, who is. You can tell that Shakespeare and Goethe valued his work and that they were heavily in debt towards his works. There is a lot of energy and a youthful ambition running through the plays and I wounder what he would have been written if he lived. You wouldn't be disappointed with reading these plays.

Great Book, Great Price
By Eric Taylor
Because this was reproduced printing from an earlier source, I expected the layout and maybe smallness of the text to be a problem. I was very suprised. It was a very good read and Christopher Marlowe is just awesome. Great story of temptation and regret. Everyone should love this book.

Somethings are GREAT -- others, not so much...
By Dustin Williams
As an college educator in computer science, I am always on the lookout for new programming textbooks that might be helpful for beginning students. Often times, books that are "designed for kids" tend to be awesome for adults as well.

Here's what I like about this book:
- Designed for first-time beginners who know absolutely nothing about programming!
- Teaches the fundamental basics of Python that are needed to create various, fun projects.
- Beautifully illustrated with visual examples. The book just makes you "want" to learn how to program, especially the first chapters!
- Focuses more upon GUI programming, such as how to work with Turtle Graphics, Tkinter, PyGame, etc.

What needs improved:
- Teaches Python 2 (instead of 3 -- the current version).
- Requires users to install PyGame (a game development feature), which works well for Windows-based PCs, but not so much for Mac users.
- Some chapters focus so strongly on making the experience "fun" that the author tends to gloss over important programming concepts without giving them the attention that's needed to ensure the reader adequately grasps them.

Overall, it's a fun book that's helpful to beginners. Yet, there are aspects that should of been improved in order to make it awesome.

Excellent way to learn Python for youngsters – and adults.
By Jerry Saperstein
The publisher says this a book is intended to help 11 to 15 year olds who want to learn how to program in Python on their own. This is true. Author Craig Richardson does an exemplary job of making programming in Python – and I am not being loose with my words – easy to learn. Not only for kids, but for adults as well. I would instantly recommend this book as an introduction to programming for people with no prior experience in the art.

I like Richardson’s approach. He has created 10 “adventures” to guide the learner through their mastery of basic programming concept and the Python language. (By the way, Richardson specifically prohibits the use of Python 3: for this book, only Python v2.7.8 or later will work.)

The “adventures” are oriented toward simple games which probably has the greatest chance of keeping younger minds involved and won’t bore adults either. All the code is very clearly laid out and is also downloadable. Videos are also available for some topics. (I haven’t worked every code example, so I can’t comment on bugs, if any.) Lots of illustrations as well.

One thing Richardson does that most Python teachers don’t is introduce Tkinter, the module used for creating Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) very early in the game. Many Python instructional don’t mention Tkinter, assuming their readers will use only Command Line driven programs. I think Richardson’s approach, especially for younger learners, is much better and will help keep reader interest.

This is a fun book. It makes learning Python easy and entertaining.

True, Adventures In Python covers mostly basic stuff, much of which will not be terribly useful in the real world. But this book will definitely help the motivated reader become comfortable with bossing the computer around through coding and does provide an understanding of Python.

And, as I said, adults new to programming would find this book useful as well.

In my opinion, an excellent adventure!

Jerry

FUN/Instructional Guide to Python Programming for Adolescents and Adults. Cross Platform Windows/MAC/Linux/Raspberry Python 2.6+
By Ira Laefsky
This instructional and FUN introduction to Python programming aimed at adolescents but appropriate to anyone with minimal programming background has much to recommend it. It has FUN graduated examples beginning with Installation, Hello World-type programs and Turtle Graphics, using graphics for games with the TKinter graphical extrensions, Pygame ending with highly interactive graphical games.
The book is divided into 10 increasingly advanced projects all of which are fun and cross-platform.

The author has taken special care that all of the examples are cross platform. Installation instructions are included for Windows 7 & 8, MAC OS X,
Linux and Raspberry Pi. The author has chosen to use the Python 2.6+ rather than a version of the 3.0+ stream. I believe the reason for this is the wider availability of programming environments and Libraries--indeed most scientific applications of Python default to 2.6+ as certain scientific libraries are not available yet in a 3.0+ release.

She hated hospitals.

Olivia swallowed hard against the acrid taste that settled on her tongue and the fearful memories that whispered through her mind as she entered the main doors and reluctantly scoured the directory for the department she needed.

Needed, ha, now there was a term. The last thing she needed was to reconnect with her estranged husband, even if he'd apparently been asking for her. Xander had made his choices when he left her two years ago, and she'd managed just fine, thank you, since then. Fine. Yeah, a great acronym for freaked out, insecure, neurotic and emotional. That probably summed it up nicely. She didn't really need to even be here, and yet she was.

The elevator pinged, and its doors slid open in front of her. She fought the urge to turn tail and run. Instead, she deliberately placed one foot in front of the other, entering the car and pressing the button for the floor she needed.

Damn, there was that word again. Need. Four measly letters with a wealth of meaning. It was right up there with want. On its own insignificant, but when placed in the context of a relationship where two people were heading in distinctly different directions it had all the power in the world to hurt. She'd overcome that hurt. The pain of abandonment. The losses that had almost overwhelmed her completely. At least she'd thought she had, right up until the phone call that had jarred her from sleep this morning.

Olivia gripped the strap of her handbag just that little bit tighter. She didn't have to see Xander if she didn't want to—even if he had apparently woken from a six-week coma last night demanding to see her. Demanding, yes, that would be Xander. Nothing as subtle as a politely worded request. She sighed and stepped forward as the doors opened at her floor, then halted at the reception area.

"Can I help you?" the harried nurse behind the counter asked her, juggling an armful of files.

"Dr. Thomas, is he available? He's expecting me."

"Oh, you're Mrs. Jackson? Sure, follow me."

The nurse showed her into a blandly decorated private waiting room, then left, saying the doctor would be with her shortly.

Unable to sit, Olivia paced. Three steps forward. Three steps back. And again. They really ought to make these rooms bigger, she thought in frustration. The click of the door opening behind her made her spin around. This was the doctor, she assumed, although he looked far too young to be a neurological specialist.

"Mrs. Jackson, thank you for coming."

She nodded and took his proffered hand, noting the contrast between them—his clean, warm and dry, hers paint stained and so cold she'd begun to wonder if she'd lost all circulation since she'd received the news about Xander.

"You said Xander had been in an accident?"

"Yes, he lost control of his car on a wet road. Hit a power pole. His physical injuries have healed as well as could have been expected. Now he's out of the coma, he's been moved from the high-dependency unit and onto a general ward."

"And his accident? I was told it happened six weeks ago? That's a long time to be in a coma, isn't it?"

"Yes, it is. He'd been showing signs of awareness these past few days, and his nerve responses were promising. Then last night he woke fully, asking for you. It caught the staff by surprise. Only his mother was listed as next of kin."

Olivia sank into a chair. Xander? Asking for her? On the day he'd left her he'd said they had nothing to say to each other anymore. Were they talking about the same man?

"I…I don't understand," she finally managed.

"His other injuries aside, Mr. Jackson is suffering from post-traumatic amnesia. It's not unusual after a brain injury—in fact, studies show that less than 3 percent of patients experience no memory loss."

"And he's not in that 3 percent."

The doctor shook his head. "Post-traumatic amnesia is a phase people go through following a significant brain injury, when they are confused, disoriented and have trouble with their memory, especially short-term memory loss. Although, Mr. Jackson's case is a little more unusual with some long-term memory loss evident. I take it you were unaware of his accident?"

"I rarely see anyone who is in regular contact with him and I was never particularly close with his mother. I'm not surprised no one told me. I haven't seen Xander since he walked out on our marriage two years ago. We're just waiting for a court date to complete our divorce."

Olivia shuddered. Even now she couldn't keep the bitterness from her voice.

"Ah, I see. That makes things problematic then."

"Problematic?"

"For his release."

"I don't understand." Olivia furrowed her brow as she tried to make sense of the doctor's words. "He lives alone, does he not?"

"As far as I know."

"He believes he's coming home to you."

Shock held her rigid in her chair. "H-he does?"

"He believes you are still together. It's why he's asking for you. His first words when he woke up were, "Tell my wife I'm okay."

Dr. Thomas began to explain the nature of Xander's injuries, but his words about loss of physical form due to the length of his coma and difficulties with short-term memory on top of the longer-term memory loss barely filtered through. All she could think of was that after all this time, her estranged husband wanted her.

"Excuse me," she interrupted the doctor. "But just how much does Xander remember?"

"As far as we can tell, his most recent clear memory is from about six years ago."

"But that was just after we married," she blurted.

That meant he remembered nothing of them finishing renovations on their late 1800s home overlooking Cheltenham Beach, nothing of the birth of their son five years ago.

Nothing of Parker's death just after he turned three. She struggled to form the words she needed to ask her next question.

"Can he…does he…will he remember?"

The doctor shrugged. "It's possible. It's also possible he may never remember those lost years or that he may only regain parts of them."

She sat silently for a moment, letting the doctor's words sink in; then she drew in a deep breath. She had to do this. "Can I see him now?"

"Certainly. Come with me."

He led Olivia to a large room on the ward. There were four beds, but only one, near the window, was occupied. She steeled herself to move forward. To look at the man she'd once pledged her life to. The man she'd loved more than life itself and who she'd believed loved her equally in return. Her heart caught as she gazed on his all-too-familiar face, and she felt that same tug anew when she saw the similarities to Parker. They'd been like peas in a pod. She rubbed absently at the ache in the center of her chest, as if the motion could relieve the gaping hole there.

"He's sleeping naturally, but he'll probably wake soon," the doctor said at her side after a cursory glance at Xander's notes. "You can sit with him."

"Th-thank you," she replied automatically, lowering herself onto the seat at his bedside, her back to the window and the sunshine that sparkled on the harbor in the distance.

Olivia let her eyes drift over the still figure lying under the light covers. She started at his feet, skimming over the length of his legs and his hips before drifting over his torso and to his face. He'd lost weight and muscle mass—his usually powerful frame now leaner, softer. A light beard covered his normally clean-shaven jaw, and his hair was in dire need of a cut.

She couldn't help it. She ached for him. He would hate being this vulnerable and exposed. Xander was a man used to action, to decisiveness. To acting rather than being acted on. Lying helpless in a hospital bed like this would normally drive him nuts. Olivia started in shock as Xander's eyes opened and irises of piercing gray met hers. Recognition dawned in Xander's gaze, and her heart wrenched as he smiled at her, his eyes shining in genuine delight. She felt the connection between them as if it were a tangible thing—as if it had never been stretched to the breaking point by circumstances beyond both of their control. Her lips automatically curved in response.

How long had it been since she'd seen his smile? Far, far too long. And she'd missed it. She'd missed him. For two awful, lonely years Olivia had tried to fool herself that you could fall out of love with someone just as easily as you had fallen in love with him, if you tried hard enough. But she'd been lying to herself. You couldn't flip a switch on love, and you couldn't simply shove your head in a hole in the ground and pretend someone hadn't been the biggest part of your life from the day you'd met him.

She loved him still.

"Livvy?" Xander's voice cracked a little, as if it was rusty and disused.

"It's me," she replied shakily. "I'm here."

Tears burned in her eyes. Her throat choked up, and she reached out to take his hand. The tears spilled down her cheeks as she felt his fingers close tight around hers. He sighed, and his eyes slid closed again. A few seconds passed before he croaked one word.

"Good."

She fought back the sob that billowed from deep inside. On the other side of the bed Dr. Thomas cleared his throat.

"Xander?"

"Don't worry—he's sleeping again. One of the nurses will be by soon to do observations. He'll probably wake again then. Now, if you'll excuse me.?"

"Oh, yes, sure. Thank you."

She barely noticed the doctor leave, or one of the other patients shuffling into the room with his walker and a physical therapist hovering beside him. No, her concentration was fixed solely on the man in the bed in front of her and on the steady, even breaths that raised his chest and lowered it again.

Her thoughts scattered to and fro, finally settling on the realization that Xander could have died in the accident that had stolen his memory and she might never have known about it. That she might never have had another opportunity to beg him for one more chance. It opened a whole new cavern of hurt inside her until she slammed it closed. He hadn't died, she reminded herself. He'd lived. And he'd forgotten that he'd ever ended things between them.

Xander's fingers were still locked around hers. As if she was his anchor. As if he truly wanted her to be there with him. She leaned forward and gently lifted his hand up against her cheek. He was warm, alive. Hers? She hoped so. In fact she wanted him as deeply and as strongly right now as she had ever wanted him. A tiny kernel of hope germinated deep inside Olivia's mind. Could his loss of memory allow them that second chance he'd so adamantly refused?

Right here, right now, she knew that she'd do anything to have him back.

Anything.

Including pretending the problems in their past had never happened? she asked herself. The resounding answer should have shocked her, but it didn't.

Yes. She'd do even that.

Two

Olivia let herself in the house and closed the door, leaning back against it with a sigh as she tried to release the tension that now gripped her body. It didn't make a difference. Her shoulders were still tight and felt as if they were sitting up around her ears, and the nagging headache that had begun on the drive home from the hospital grew even more persistent.

What on earth had she done?

Was it lying to allow Xander to continue to believe they were still happily married? How could it be a lie when it was what he believed and when it was what she'd never stopped wanting?

You couldn't turn back the clock. You couldn't undo what was done five minutes ago any more than you could undo what happened in the past two years. But you could make a fresh start, and that's what they were going to do, she argued with herself.

It might not be completely ethical to take advantage of his amnesia this way, and she knew that she was running a risk—a huge risk—by doing so. At any moment his memory could return and, with it, Xander's refusal to talk through their problems or lean on her for help of any kind. Yet if there was a chance, any chance that they could be happy again, she had to take it.

She pushed off the door and walked down the hall toward the large entertainer's kitchen they'd had so much fun renovating after they'd moved into the two-story late nineteenth-century home a week after their marriage. She automatically went through the motions, putting the kettle on and boiling water for a pot of chamomile tea. Hopefully that would soothe the headache.

But what would soothe the niggling guilt that plucked at her heart over her decision?

Was she just doing this to resolve her own regrets? Wrapped in her grief over Parker's death and filled with recriminations and remorse, hadn't she found it easier to let Xander go rather than fight for their marriage—hell, fight for him? She'd accused him of locking her out of his feelings, but hadn't she done exactly the same thing? And when he'd left, hadn't she let him go? Then, when she'd opened her eyes to what she was letting slip from her life, it was too late. He hadn't wanted to even discuss reconciliation or counseling. It was as if he'd wiped his slate clean—and wiped his life with her right along with it.

It had hurt then and it hurt now, but time and distance had given her some perspective. Had opened her eyes to her own contribution to the demise of their marriage. Mistakes she wouldn't make again.

The kettle began to whistle, momentarily distracting her from her thoughts. Olivia poured the boiling water into the teapot and took her favorite china cup and saucer from the glass-fronted cupboard where she displayed her antique china collection. After putting the tea things on a tray, she carried everything outside. She set the tray down on a table on her paved patio and sank into one of the wood-and-canvas deck chairs. The fabric creaked a little as she shifted into a more comfortable position.

Bathed in the evening summer sun, Olivia closed her eyes and took a moment to relax and listen and let the sounds of her surroundings soak in. Behind the background hum of traffic she could hear the noises of children playing in their backyards. The sound, always bittersweet, was a strong reminder that even after tragedy, other people's lives still carried on. She opened her eyes, surprised to feel the sting of tears once more, and shifted her focus to pouring her tea into her cup. The delicate aroma of the chamomile wafted up toward her. There was something incredibly calming about the ritual of making tea. It was one of the habits she'd developed to ground herself when she'd felt as though she was losing everything—including her mind.

She lifted her cup, taking a long sip of the hot brew and savoring the flavor on her tongue as she thought again about her decision back at the hospital. The risk she was taking loomed large in her mind. So many things could go wrong. But it was still early days. Xander had a long road to recovery ahead, and it would be many days yet, if not weeks, before he was released from hospital. He had yet to walk unaided, and a physical therapy program would need to be undertaken before he could come home again.

Good book.
By S. Frank
Good story. Xander and Olivia have been separated for two years and are about to be divorced when Xander is involved in a car accident. When he wakes from six weeks in a coma, he has no memory of the previous six years and asks for Olivia. Stunned, she decides to take him to their home to recover and see if they can repair their marriage.

Olivia doesn't tell him that they are separated and what caused it. Instead she uses the time to try to show him that they can be happy together again. But she can't ignore the fact that she's hiding the truth from him and dreads what will happen if his memory returns. Xander is happy to be back home with Olivia, but he can't escape the feeling that something is wrong. When Xander finds about about the divorce, he feels betrayed by Olivia's lies. When he stumbles upon the evidence of their son and his death his memory returns with a vengeance. He is devastated and furious with her.

Both Olivia and Xander were responsible for the death of their marriage. Each of them had tragedy in their history, and each had learned to cope in a different way. When their son died, neither leaned on the other for the support they needed and therefore grew apart. Each had coped in a different way, but the other saw it in a negative manner and the hurt grew worse. If they want to make a go of their marriage, each of them is going to have to face their fears and learn to share their feelings.

I didn't have too much sympathy for Olivia through most of the book. I felt that she brought a lot of her trouble on herself by lying to Xander. When she confessed about their pending divorce, she should have told him about their son at the same time. That she didn't created the possibility of a huge problem later and that's what she got. She did redeem herself at the end, so I have hope that they will have their happy future.

Xander also had his issues with sharing his feelings, thanks to his family's example when his older brother died as a child. His methods of dealing with his son's\ death had him pulling away from Olivia emotionally when she needed him there for her. Losing her a second time made him realize that things had to change, and that he couldn't do it alone.

I would have liked to see an epilogue for this story and see how things are going for them a year or two later.

Fantastic book...
By Judy
The Wife He Couldn’t Forget by Yvonne Lindsay is a story that will stay with me for a long time. Xander Jackson was injured in an automobile accident and has been in a coma for six weeks. His wife, Olivia “Livvy” only discovers that he’s been in an accident when he wakes and asks for her. Xander has amnesia and he and Livvy are in the process of getting a divorce. Livvy goes to Xander’s aide and takes him to her home when he’s released from the hospital. Livvy has never stopped loving her husband. She wants to make amends and hopes that he doesn’t remember their troubled times. In the end, secrets come back to haunt you and Livvy discovers that the secrets she’s kept from Xander could be the end to her second chance. Ms. Lindsay knows how to bring out the emotions in her characters. I felt Olivia’s pain over her loss and the decision that contributed to it, but I also felt the pain the Xander went through when he regained his memory. I absolutely loved this book and I highly recommend it. Ms. Lindsay is one of my all-time favorite authors and she never disappoints. I’d like to disclose that I received a copy of The Wife He Couldn’t Forget in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Olivia "Livvy" and Xander Jackson are in the process of a divorce when he is involved in a serious accident and wakes after 6 weeks in a coma with amnesia asking for his wife. He never remembers all that happened to cause them to part and Olivia has never stopped loving and wanting him back home, sees this as an opportunity to get back the man she always loved. Sounds like a plan but Ms. Lindsay would not be the great author she is if it was that simple, so she gradually lets the past come back to haunt Livvy, and as Xander starts to remember the reason for leaving, the future she wants with her husband starts to slip through her fingers. Will love be able to conquer all the hurts of the past? A truly wonderful book that you will not want to put down till the end. I was given this book for an honest review it was honestly one of the best books I read. loved it

Review
"Barclay, Jack and Schneider are all musicians and write about Canadian music from the inside. They survey the music from the perspective of informed fans, as opposed to dispassionate critics, and they do it with energy, enthusiasm and devotion." —Waterloo Record (June 25, 2011)

"There is, without a doubt, no better book on the rise of popular Canadian music in the 1980s and 90s than Have Not Been The Same. . . . [It] tells the story of a country learning to love the sound of its own voice. Recommended." —Scene (July 14, 2011)

"Maybe it's American egotism that makes us treat Canada like our toque-sportin' retarded cousin who on occasion says or does something cool or funny. Fact is, if we paid enough attention, we'd see that the poor little hoser has quite a lot to say, and most of it's insightful and stimulating. Hell, the spaz may only have ADD or something." —www.Blurt-Online.com

From the Publisher
An astoundingly comprehensive discussion of the greatest decade of Canadian music. "Have Not Been The Same" captures the spirit of Canadian rock from 1985 to 1995, a time when it became cool to be Canadian. Indie labels flourished, campus radio exploded, MuchMusic changed the way we look at our music, major labels tapped into the underground, and an exciting new generation of artists created a new canon of CanRock that altered the musical landscape for generations to come. Bands like The Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, and Sloan created a fever pitch for Canadian music, but there were also numerous others in the underground who created equally exciting work. Have Not Been The Same is a vital, lively, and entertaining examination of this groundbreaking decade, with vivid original photographs and interviews with all the major players. It's a must-read for any fan of Canadian music.

This book is quite brilliant, Michael Barclay along with Ian A.D Jack and Jason Schneider have put together an amazing book which looks at various Canadian musicians between 1985-1995. I found this book great because it sort of shined light on a lot of amazing bands and individual musicians throughout this era that didn't have a source detailing their history, influence etc.
Being a big fan of Halifax bands as well (sloan, thrush hermit, etc.) I was very happy when i saw that the halifax scene or "underground" was given a very detailed account.
The histories of several bands were given full chapters such as The tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo and Sloan. The punk music scene in Western Canada was also given a spotlight. All-in-all any music fan would love this! I definetly do!

An excellent compendum
By Melissa Bratcher
The bible on Canadian Rock is reverently written, and interesting through and through, chock full of fascinating information and in depth looks at the finest of the CanRock scene, including the oft-overlooked Sloan. Well worth reading.

No, The Artists Were Not Popular Acts...They Were Underground Musicians
By Son of Spam
It seems the previous reviewer hasn't even read the book. Or if he has, he's completely misunderstood the premise of it.

Yes, it's true that music from the United States or Britain was more "popular" (and ergo, a bigger part of people's so-called "life changing" experiences). But so much of the music and many of the musicians presented in this book were underground (a claim that even their American or British counterparts would find difficult to make).

And that's actually the beauty of it. As I'm reading this tome, I find myself searching out CD's by the artists (none of whom, or very very few of whom are available via retail stores). It's part of an enjoyable journey: to read about interesting musicians and interesting music, and searching for the very same music via alternative (excuse the pun, lol!) methods, ie: via the Internet. Some of the musicians have moved on to other stages in their lives (some becoming national politicians) and I've even been able to contact them to get a copy of their releases.

So don't buy this book if you have a national chip on your shoulder. If you want to read about popular artists from the 70's/80's/90's, go pick up an unauthorized biography of the Sex Pistols/Duran Duran/Nirvana at your local library. But if you want to delve deeper, into the music that was bubbling just under the surface, buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

Can't find it anywhere and haven't read it, yet it was published a month and a half ago
By Phillip J. Buechner
I want to make it clear up front that I haven't read this book. In spite of this I have a few issues I'd like to raise. First of all, according to Amazon's information, the book was published 11/13/2013. Today is 1/1/2014. A little more than a month and a half has gone by since the book was published and I can't find it anywhere, and I've made a lengthy search of the web. Secondly, I used the Amazon page to read the first few pages and it's all good general information that can be gotten in any search of the SEALs. Again, just the first few pages......not enough to talk about in detail. Thirdly, I've searched the web for information for author Jack Calico and found nothing. What I did find was food for thought, though. There is another book about SEAL mindset on Amazon by a Lars Draeger. I immediately noticed that it was interesting that his last name was the same as the rebreather device that the SEALs use. It could be a funny pseudonym that means nothing, or it could be a hint that this guy wasn't a SEAL and simply "harvested" his data from outside sources. In IRON WILL, we find the author's name to be Jack Calico. Maybe he was or is a SEAL. Or, maybe it's a funny pseudonym taken from Capt. John "Calico Jack" Rackham, famous pirate that was hanged by the British so long ago. I honestly don't know.

For a book to become out of print in just over a month, one of two things had to have happened. Either very few copies were printed in expectation of a less than enthusiastic reception, or there was a huge clamor over the book that motivated a rush on it. Or, there's always the devious possibility that the entire picture here was a "dramatization" in order to use any means, ethical or not, to drum up sales. It's more than strange when I can't find a book by looking at the web sites, both used and new, that are covered on internet searches. Were talking all the sites that are available in the U.S., Canada, and the UK. In almost 20 years of searching for books I've never encountered this before. It makes me just a bit suspicious of the entire scenario.

My wife just pointed out one more possibility that exists that I overlooked. She points out that person or persons unknown might have bought out the entire print run because within this book exists information that someone doesn't want made available to the public. How about it? Those of you that have read it; does it seem to contain anything that would threaten anyone in any way?

In spite of what I've mentioned I would still like to read it. I'm too curious now not to.

Great Book
By sexzvw
I wish I had bought this book before I did my training! This book really helps you to understand what it takes to succeed in the military. Although I was physically prepared to do all the training, I was not as prepared mentally as I would have liked and if I had this book before I joined the Navy I know it would have helped. Great tips not only for the military life but for life outside the military as well.
