LEARN HOW TO STUDY: Developing the study skills and approaches to learning that will help you succeed in university: A virtual tutorial wit

Please WELCOME back Professor Derek Rowntree's LEARN HOW TO STUDY, now in its 5th edition. First published 45 years ago, it has since helped more than a MILLION readers around the world in a variety of languages.

Back in 1970 it was the ORIGINAL — the first book about studying to offer readers the friendly, tutorial style (incorporating 'interactive' activities with feedback) that has since become such a feature of Open University teaching materials and has been adopted by numerous other authors of books for students.

Since 1988, however, Professor Rowntree was too busy pioneering elearning courses at the Open University to have time to update his book. Consequently it soon seemed to him to be not relevant enough to the very courses he was developing, so he let it go out of print for the last ten years. Now, in his retirement, and many years richer in experience of student learning, he has at last found time to rewrite the book into the 21st century of learning.

LEARN HOW TO STUDY is not a collection of handy hints and quick fixes. Of course, it includes chapters on the critical reading of texts (in print and on screen), making notes, learning from seminars, lectures and new media, writing essays, tackling exams successfully, and so on — but presented in a way that encourages students to become reflective and exploratory about their approaches to learning and choose for themselves which ways of studying best meet their purposes. Professor Rowntree suggests to students that the three things they need to do to succeed are as follows:
•to understand what they want out of learning and what other people (especially tutors) expect of them.
•to develop approaches that will enable them to acquire the kind of learning that will satisfy their tutors while also getting what they themselves want from the process.
•to convincingly demonstrate that learning in both formal and informal assessment situations.
And this ‘virtual tutorial’ aims to help readers succeed in these goals, despite the 'hidden curriculum' and the often conflicting pressures within their learning situation.

SIMPLY PROFOUND
I cannot believe there is no review for this which is why I am doing it, from a personal see me feel me standpoint, coz I'm old like that. Maybe because it's an english book of the modest open university don't blow your horn approach which has this book so quiet whilst other mega hype bollux books sell the 'secrets' of success for 50 bucks +.
OK, now my story of how I was introduced to this book over 3 decades ago whilst on the Rapid Track at college in London, we were mostly international students paying big fees so wanted to complete courses in half time. We had special Study Techniques which were incredible, the only experience I've had so profound in changing behaviour was The Alexandra Technique in adjusting how we sit, walk, talk etc.
Our Study Techniques had us adjust our patterns of reading, writing, skimming, discussion by simply minor modifications whose affects were incredible. Remember we were international students, from all parts of former British empire yet we were all equally affected. We passed in half the time of regular students, I went onto study in the US where the simple profound study approach of Derek Rowntree became habitual.
I have not mentioned any of the 'techniques' here as much cognitive research has been done since with many books and videos on sale those days. But none put it in such a simple and profound way with NO hype, like this beautiful simple book does.
It's the simplicity of these techniques which is why I rate this book so highly, so small, so light with NO hype and has disappears off my shelf numerous times because it's so simply profound.

Bad Childhood---Good Life: How to Blossom and Thrive in Spite of an Unhappy Childhood, by Dr. Laura Schlessinger

In this important book, Dr. Laura Schlessinger shows men and women that they can have a Good Life no matter how Bad their Childhood.

For each of us, there is a connection between our early family dynamics and experiences and our current attitudes and decisions. Many of the people Dr. Laura has helped did not realize how their histories impacted their adult lives, or how their choices in people, repetitive situations, and decisions -- even their emotional reactions -- were connected to those early negative experiences, playing a major role in their current unhappiness.

For these people and millions like them, too much time is dedicated to repeating the ugly dynamics of childhood in a vain attempt to repair or cope with deep hurt and longings. Too often they use their emotional pain to control others or excuse their own inappropriate and destructive behaviors. Some turn to therapy, only to find themselves trapped in their self-pitying victim mode, robbed of optimism, confidence, and growth.

Dr. Laura will help you realize that no matter what circumstances you came from or currently live in, you are ultimately responsible for how you react to them. The acceptance of this basic truth is the source of your power to secure the Good Life you long for. In her signature straightforward style, with real-life examples, Dr. Laura shows you what you will gain by not being satisfied with an identity as a victim, or even as a survivor -- but striving to be a victor!

In Bad Childhood -- Good Life, Dr. Laura will guide you to accept the truth of the assaults on your psyche and soul, understand your unique coping style and how it impacts your daily thoughts and actions, and help you embrace a life of more peace and happiness.

Bad Childhood -- Good Life comes from a compassionate and personal place. Dr. Laura also reveals some of her own experiences with a difficult childhood and what efforts it took to attain a Good Life. She writes, "My resilience has paid off, and I'm doing the best I can with what I've got." Now you can, too.

Amazon.com Review
With her characteristically pointed advice and take-no-prisoners attitude, Dr. Laura's book Bad Childhood – Good Life tackles one of the most basic questions of therapy: How can a person effectively move past the injuries of a bad childhood? Her answer will be familiar to her fans—look at your current behavior and modify what you can change rather than simply venting your anger or allowing yourself to ever be victimized again.

Forget about simply accepting or forgiving your parents for their errors—Dr. Laura extols the virtues of conquering. Through excerpts from her radio show and letters from her listeners, she illustrates her points about guilt, anger and fear in personalized accounts from individuals. Short lists and question/answer sections make for an easy read that allows you to smoothly fast forward and backtrack to the topics you find most relevant at the moment—and numerous references to other chapters and her website provide all the additional information you could want. Faith is a subtle but definite component; some readers will find it the most helpful part of the book while it decidedly won't appeal to others.

Not everyone will agree with—or appreciate--her succinct manner that drives right to the root of issues. Like her show, the book presents absolutes rather than possible alternatives. For readers looking for a definitive method for moving past childhood issues, Dr. Laura might offer the solution. Jill Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
Tis the season, right? For childhood issues to flare up just in time for the trip home for the holidays. Instead of resolving to lose those pesky 10 pounds, 2006 may be the perfect time to stop letting a bad childhood ruin another year, says Schlessinger, author of seven New York Times bestsellers and host of an internationally syndicated radio talk show. Schlessinger uses radio listeners' call-ins, her own stories and a little help from Carly Simon to help adults stuck in the past break free from destructive patterns and move peaceably forward. "The truth is that there is always a battle between the history and the present," she writes. Schlessinger tailors her advice staples (take charge, get tough, be positive, live for something other than yourself) toward securing victory over childhood traumas by admonishing readers against thinking emotionally about emotional subjects, advocating black and white reasoning (one listener's mother is deemed "evil") and proposing an amoeba-brainless and unthinking-constitutes a workable decision making model. Readers already of the Schlessinger school will find much here to appreciate, though it's doubtful this will win her any new fans.

From Booklist
Schlessinger is, of course, a recognized name as an internationally syndicated radio talk-show host and author of seven previous best-sellers. Her latest book will no doubt hit the best-seller lists as well. And like its predecessors, this one is based on her research, in other words, the calls and letters that came into her radio show. Her point here is to guide readers in getting past any emotional damage they suffered at the hands of their parents so they may lead productive, happy lives. But, as Schlessinger admits, it "sounds obvious. So why isn't it that simple?" She starts with acknowledging that many people don't realize that childhood history can indeed have an impact on the way adults lead their lives. On the other hand--and this is the premise of her book--keeping yourself in a perpetual state of victimhood because of childhood pain ensures you will experience little or no movement toward a nondestructive, loving, secure adulthood. Schlessinger offers advice on the best steps to take to move in that direction and, truthfully, there is something in this book for everyone to benefit from. Brad Hooper

"You are a product of what you make of and do with those experiences"
By Chris D.
I really liked this book, I only read it because I was curious. As many people here, I too have had a bad childhood. Abandoned in a catholic orphanage at age 3 until 11....then in an abusive foster family. As a child I really never knew what it would be like to be loved and belong to a family. But I am now 62 and have my own family. It is amazing how wonderful my children have turned out. I have had a counselor tell me that lit is not possible to have a wonderful family after a childhood like mine. But I will say "Through Him anything is possible" I have been married for 40 years. I have to say I put many of these principles from this book to work. I never had a victim mentality. I decided at 18 after I left the foster family, that I would not look back and I am now in charge of my own life. But I was angry with God for allowing me to go through that type of childhood. Now looking back I can see how He was there for me. I will not get into detail. But the book has many good ideas that I can honestly look back and say I did that and things worked out for me. If you had a bad childhood I would highly recommend it.

I'm off the fence now...
By E. Glennon
Before I purchased and read this book, I was on the fence, "Did I have a bad childhood?" Well the answer is no, I did not, at least not to the extent that others have had bad childhoods, but the lessons taught in this book in fact can help ALL of us to not take things so personally, and to enjoy what life has given us now, as adults. I love Dr. Laura, I don't alway agree with her, but this time she is just trying to help the adults in this country grow up a bit.

Like any book, her story is her story. She came from her pointer of view and her point of view alone. End of story.

Win or Lose CHAPTER ONE

“Stay on your toes! You gotta be ready for the ball!” Coach Flores shouted encouragingly.

I stood across from my friend Jessi at soccer practice at Kentville Middle School, a soccer ball in my hands. I tossed the ball to her. Jessi stopped it with her upper thigh, bounced it down to her foot, and kicked it back at me. We were doing a volley exercise, passing the ball back and forth using different parts of our body.

“Keep it coming, Devin!” Jessi called out as she danced around on her feet, waiting for the ball.

I threw the ball again, and this time Jessi ducked into it, her braids flapping in the wind as she hit the ball back to me with her head.

“Now, that’s using your head!” my other friend Emma called to us, laughing at her own silly joke.

“Boo!” I heard Grace, the eighth-grade captain of the Kentville Kangaroos (otherwise known as the Kicks), call out. “That’s the oldest soccer joke in the book!”

“Not the oldest,” Emma said with a gleam in her eyes. “Why did Cinderella get kicked off the soccer team?”

Groans broke out over the entire soccer field before all the Kicks replied together:

“Because she ran away from the ball!”

“Now, that,” Emma said, smiling triumphantly, “is the oldest soccer joke around!”

Everyone started cracking up, even Coach, who chuckled as she glanced at her wristwatch. “We might as well call it quits. I haven’t had a chance to check out today’s paper, and I’d like to do that while you are all still here. The article about the Kicks was supposed to run today!”

Everyone began buzzing excitedly as Coach went to her office to get the newspaper.

“Do you think my photo is in it? I hope they got my good side!” said my friend Frida. (She wanted to be an actress someday, so she was always worried about her good side.)

“I have to text my mom and make sure she picks up a paper,” Zoe added.

I grinned at my friends. When I’d first joined the Kicks at the start of the school year, the team hadn’t been doing so well. But now we were headed to the play-offs, and a reporter and a photographer from the Kentville Chronicle had showed up at a practice the week before. The reporter had asked us a bunch of questions, and then the photographer had clicked away as we’d played a scrimmage.

“We’re in luck! Coach Valentine left a bunch of copies on my desk,” said Coach Flores. She gave one to Frida before she moved down the field, handing out newspapers randomly to the other Kicks as she went. Jessi, Emma, and Zoe huddled around Frida, and I joined them.

“It’s in the sports section, section C,” Coach called.

Frida eagerly leafed through the newspaper, dropping pages onto the field until she found the article.

“Ta-da!” she cried, pointing to the team photo of the Kicks plastered across the page. “Maybe a big casting director will see me in this photo and just have to have me in her next project!” She got a faraway look in her eyes.

“Um, hello?” Jessi said impatiently as she picked up the newspaper pages Frida had scattered all over the field. She straightened up and waved the pages in front of Frida’s face. “We want to read the article!”

“Yeah!” Emma cried. “This is so exciting!”

I looked over Frida’s shoulder and saw my teammates’ smiling faces looking back at me from the newspaper. We all wore the blue-and-white Kentville uniforms, which we had worn especially for the photographer that day. I saw myself grinning, wearing—of course—my pink headband.

“Kentville Kangaroos ‘Kick’ Their Way to the Play-Offs . . .” Frida began to read the article as Emma clapped her hands excitedly.

“It’s been more than twenty years since the Kentville Kangaroos earned their nickname, ‘the Kicks.’ Coach Maria Luisa Flores should know,” Frida continued reading aloud. “She was a member of the middle school soccer team when the Kangaroos were two-time state champs in 1991 and 1992. It was during this time that the team got their nickname for the arsenal of kicks they used against their opponents. The name ‘the Kicks’ might have stuck, but the team’s winning streak didn’t. The Kicks haven’t seen a play-off season since 1996. Even when Flores came back to her hometown to coach for Kentville a couple of years ago, the team continued to struggle, finishing 10–1 last season. ‘I was focused on fun and making it a positive experience for the girls,’ Flores said about her early years as the Kangaroos’ girls’ coach. ‘But the girls made it very clear to me that they wanted to have fun while being serious competitors at the same time.’ ”

“Losing all the time was so not fun!” Emma interrupted, and everyone nodded their agreement. Even though it had been only a few months ago, it seemed more like a lifetime ago when our practices had been basically chaotic messes.

I shuddered. “Do you remember how disorganized everything was?”

“What about the Panthers game when I scored in our own goal?” Emma asked. “You can’t get any more disorganized than that!”

Coach’s emphasis on fun and fair above all else hadn’t worked out too well. When she’d combined it with solid coaching skills, the Kicks had finally started improving.

Frida continued reading: “Flores’s new coaching attitude, and some fresh blood, turned the team around. A talented group of seventh graders, including Connecticut transplant Devin Burke, the seventh-grade co-captain, are widely regarded as having jump-started the team this season.”

“Devin Burke! I know her!” Jessi yelled, jumping up and down. “Will you sign an autograph for me?”

I blushed. “Cut it out,” I said, swatting her hands away as she tried to hug me, acting like a crazed fan. I felt totally weird that the newspaper was singling me out. We were a team! Before I could say anything else, Frida kept on reading:

“ ‘I don’t know where my team would be without me,’ Burke said at practice. The team is gearing up for their first play-off match against the Newton Tigers this Saturday.”

Frida’s voice trailed off as the quote sank in. She stopped reading and looked at me, her mouth open. Jessi, Emma, and Zoe all stared at me too, with surprised—and hurt—looks in their eyes.

“Wow, Devin,” Jessi said slowly. The joking smile from a moment ago left her face.

I don’t know where my team would be without me. The sentence echoed in my head, over and over. It sounded so stuck-up.

“I never said that!” I cried, feeling like I was on trial, with their angry eyes staring at me. I thought back to the day when the reporter, Cassidy Vale, had visited our team. She had seemed really interested in talking to me, especially after finding out I was not only new to the team but new to Kentville Middle School.

“And you were made co-captain?” she had asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Yes,” I’d said, nodding, but I hadn’t told her that part of the reason was that nobody else in the seventh grade had wanted to be a co-captain at the time. The team’s disorganization, plus the fact that mean Mirabelle had been the eighth-grade captain, had made the job less than desirable.

But I knew I’d made sure to tell her how much being on the Kicks meant to me. She must have gotten my words mixed up.

“I swear! I told the reporter, ‘I don’t know where I would be without my team’ not ‘I don’t know where my team would be without me.’ You’ve got to believe me!” I felt like I had swallowed a rock and that it was slowly turning around and around in my stomach.

Emma gave me a sympathetic smile. “What was in the newspaper, it really doesn’t sound like something you would say, Devin.”

“Never!” I said. “I remember telling the reporter that ‘I don’t know where I would be without my team,’ because I really don’t! I was so scared on the first day of school. Meeting you guys and joining the Kicks was the best thing that could have happened. If I hadn’t, I’d probably still be hiding out in the bathroom during lunch!” I gave a little hiccup as I choked back tears.

“Hey, Devin, relax,” Jessi said slowly as she put her arm around me. “It just took us by surprise, that’s all. And the reason it was so shocking is because we would never expect you to say something like that, never!”

“They misquoted you!” Frida said. “It happens to actors all the time. It’s part of being in the public eye.”

“All I want to do is play soccer, not be in the public eye and get all misquoted and stuff!” I felt miserable.

Zoe gave me a hug. “I believe you, Devin. Don’t worry about it. Anyone who knows you would know you’d never say anything like that.”

I was taller than Zoe, so as I hugged her back, I looked over her short strawberry-blond hair at Jessi, Emma, and Frida. They were all smiling at me.

“Group hug!” Jessi called. Zoe and I each opened an arm, and everyone came pouring in.

“Thanks, guys,” I said, hugging them tight. “I don’t know where I would be without my friends, and you can quote me on that!”

After we all untangled from our group hug, Jessi smiled up at me. “Let’s focus on the positive, which is that the Kicks have made it to play-offs!”

“Yes!” I pumped a fist in the air. “And we all worked together as a team to make that happen.”

Zoe looked up. “My dad’s here. Time to go!”

I followed her gaze to the parking lot next to the field. It was filling up with cars, as practice was supposed to be done by now. I spotted my family’s white minivan. Maisie, my little sister, called it the Marshmallow.

We walked over to the benches to grab our stuff, and as we did, I noticed the other Kicks still huddled around newspapers in groups. For a second I’d forgotten that the entire team was reading the article. What were they thinking about me?

We walked by Grace, the eighth-grade co-captain. She was talking with Anjali, Maya, and Giselle, all eighth graders. They looked up at us as we passed, giving me a dirty look. I stopped in my tracks.

“Look, guys, about the article,” I began.

“Yeah, about the article,” Anjali said. “Thanks for being on our team, Devin. I don’t know what we’d do without you.” Her voice dripped with sarcasm. Maya and Giselle giggled, but Grace just looked at me intently.

“That was a pretty rude thing to say,” she said quietly.

“I didn’t say it! I swear!” I felt like I was back at square one. I explained what I had really said and how I’d been misquoted.

“Okay, Devin,” Grace said. But I could tell she didn’t believe me.

“Are we cool?” I asked.

She nodded curtly but didn’t say anything. Uh-oh. I didn’t think we were cool at all. More like ice cold, actually.

As I went to catch up with my friends, I saw Alandra, Taylor, and Zarine join Grace and her friends. They were all eighth graders too. Anjali started whispering loudly, nodding in my direction from time to time. I heard the other girls whispering back to her as they shot looks at me.

I felt my shoulders slump as I walked to the parking lot. My best friends believed me, but it was pretty obvious my other teammates didn’t.

The Kicks by Alex Morgan
By Barb
I gave this book to my nine year old granddaughter, also a soccer player, and explained the author was Alex Morgan, gold medal winner from USA women's soccer team. She immediately said she would read it for her book report. Skimming through the book I saw a good story line and will probably read it when she is finished

Superstar player and superstar children's author
By Don
With Alex Morgan joining Orlando Pride and coming to our city beautiful, I thought it would be a good idea to get a few of her books for my middle school age daughter to try out. I haven't read them myself but they are her new favorite books. No longer is it a struggle to get her to read before bed; it's actually more difficult to get her to put it down and go to bed. The books aren't very long so it only takes her a couple days to knock them out and beg for me to order the next one. I plan on continuing to purchase these as long as they keep releasing new ones and will be holding onto them to pass on to her younger soccer playing sister when she learns to read.

Perfect for tween to early teen soccer fans!
By TM of 4
My 13 year old daughter has all three books in this series. It can be difficult to find appropriate books for young teen girls, especially for sporty girls. We were excited to try the series, especially considering Alex Morgan is a favorite US women's soccer player! She really enjoyed reading these books. While this was not her favorite book in the series, she would recommend it to other girls. It would be helpful to read the books in order.

The Byzantine Lists: ERRORS OF THE LATINS (Illinois Medieval Studies), by Tia M. Kolbaba

The Byzantine lists cataloguing the 'errors' of Latin Christians have been dismissed by generations of scholars as the writings of deranged fanatics. In contrast, Tia M. Kolbaba takes these texts seriously and presents an explanation of their significance that is both erudite and eminently readable. The lists were written by Byzantines who believed that western Christians had fallen into heresy and impiety. Systematically addressing each fault enumerated in the lists - including the Filioque, fasting on the Sabbath, prohibiting clerical marriage, eating unclean food, and crossing themselves the wrong way - Kolbaba traces the likely explanations of the differences in custom and ritual between eastern and western Christians. She considers when Byzantine Christians first raised a given issue and whether any ecclesiastical law speaks to the subject. She discusses whether the Latins actually did what they were accused of and whether any Byzantine Christians also did what the Latins were accused of. She also shows how misinterpretation, misunderstanding, and xenophobia played a role in exaggerating Latin and Byzantine differences. Kolbaba skillfully argues that the lists represent a desperate effort by some Byzantines to retain their cultural independence as Latin dominance in the military and commercial spheres slowly strangled the eastern empire. "The Byzantine Lists" also speaks meaningfully to the issue of xenophobia as it appears in every age: the effort to distinguish between 'us' and 'them' by establishing one's own culture as the norm and condemning difference on the other side.

Review
"This study shows that, rather than 'ridiculous' or 'hateful' documents -- adjectives Kolbaba herself sometimes finds it difficult to avoid -- the lists may be more productively understood as aggressive, yet complex, attempts to stake out and secure the boundaries of Orthodoxy against challenges, real and perceived, posed by the shifting cultural and political frontiers of the Middle Byzantine period." -- William L. North, Religious Studies Review "Only an outstanding scholar would dare to challenge accepted wisdom, is in this case: The Byzantine Lists were compiled over hundreds of years beginning in the 11th century. They were not assembled systematically until a later century." --The Orthodox Catholic Voice ADVANCE PRAISE "This deeply thoughtful book succeeds in creating an entire world out of evidence which is usually overlooked as myopic and vaguely disgusting. Kolbaba has entered into the imaginative world of Byzantium, to reveal a challengingly unfamiliar insistence on the relation of theology to ritual, of idea to symbol, of food to spirit. This is a model study of one great medieval society revealed in the mirror of its own extreme views of its overbearing western neighbor." -- Peter Brown, author of Authority and the Sacred: Aspects of the Christianisation of the Roman World "No seasoned specialist in the field will be able to go on thinking about things Byzantine without being affected by Tia Kolbaba's challenges. On the other hand, for newcomers to Byzantine studies, her ideas offer wonderful stimulation to further research. This is a superb piece of work by a superb scholar that will be an exciting and highly regarded contribution to Byzantine, Christian, and general religious studies." -- John W. Barker, author of Justinian and the Late Roman Empire

The Hate Literature of Medieval Byzantines
By James Likoudis
This is a remarkable work by an eminent Byzantinist who has specialized in the anti-Latin polemical literature which was to have a profound effect in poisoning relations between medieval Latins and Byzantine Greeks and thereby impeding the union of the Churches.Such religious literature emanating largely from monastic circles and enumerating the abhorrent "errors" of the Latins proved to be far more influential in demonizing them than the works of professional theologians dealing with major dogmatic issues (such as the famous'Filioque'dispute) fueling the Schism between Rome and Constantinople. What were the "errors" which imbedded themselves so deeply in the Byzantine psyche that they caused such fanatical hostility towards Westerners and a massive resistance to the union of the Churches? The Latins were guilty of pillaging and looting during the first 3 Crusades and the horrific sacking of Constantinople, but pious Byzantines were further assured by religious propaganda that the Latin "heretics" were, in addition, vulgar barbarians, alien to refined manners, indecent, and "utterly filthy in their failure to distinguish between sacred things, people, actions, and profane ones". Byzantine grievances were many: Latins ate unclean foods, had contact with bodily excretions, spit near the altar, consecrated a new pope by laying the hands of a dead pope upon him, used icons for toilet seats, etc., etc. These Lists of Latin errors constituted a fascinating species of Hate-literature, but they had a special effect on the Byzantine masses in making them fear, despise, and contemn their conquerors as well as the Byzantine unionists seeking to overcome "cross-cultural misunderstandings" exacerbated by chauvinistic and xenophobic polemics. Not all Byzantines, of course, fell victim to such irrational propaganda but such Lists clearly manifested "the most extreme manifestation of anti-Latin sentiment in Byzantium". Interestingly, this scholarly study reveals that the Byzantine theologians who contributed to the Lists evidenced some serious confusion concerning doctrine and discipline and what constituted necessary and optional elements of the faith. Dr.Kolbaba utilizes the insights of cultural anthropologists and studies in the sociology of religion to analyze in some depth the psychology of medieval Greeks whose Byzantine orthodoxy and orthopraxis was fixated in liturgical and ritual forms regarded as sacred and immutable. Students of Byzantine history, and Catholics and Eastern Orthodox seeking to understand the dynamics of the Byzantine Greco-Slav Schism will find this an enlightening study that can only further genuine ecumenism.

An Interesting Examination of Medieval Greek Attitudes
By Curt Emanuel
Tia Kolbaba has written a fairly short, but very informative work regarding attitudes of the Greek Christians toward Latins. Beginning in the 11th century many Greek Religious authors composed lists of errors which the Western Church was guilty of. Among the errors listed are matters of foods eaten, religious rituals such as Lenten Fasting and Baptism, dress, behaviors such as marriage and a Latin addition to the Nicene Creed known as the Filioque (the addition of the words; "and the Son", to the procession of the Holy Spirit in the Creed - the Greeks retained the original "from the father", without this addition).

Kolbaba discusses which errors are listed and the frequency with which they are found in the various lists. This is a very interesting portion of the work; however those who have read one of the History's of the Byzantine Empire such as Vasiliev, Ostrogorsky or Treadgold will find later portions more valuable for it is here that she turns to a discussion of what these lists tell us - not about the Latins but about the Greeks themselves.

First Kolbaba discusses how many of the Greeks participate in the same errors as the Latins. She believes that many of these lists were not meant primarily to turn the Greeks against the Latins, but rather to argue that, by engaging in these behaviors, Greeks resembled them. While this is a form of demonization, it is more along the lines of, "You shouldn't be doing that - you behave like a barbarian!" For a society which prided itself on its perceived superiority to the West, this could be very powerful.

In later chapters Kolbaba discusses the general change in tone contained in these lists over time. Where earlier lists decry the Latin errors, they are less hostile and many state that almost all of the errors, with the exception of the Filioque, while wrong, may be forgiven as not reflecting a loss of truth regarding religion. However the later lists become progressively more hostile toward the Latins and tend to point out more negatives not related to religion, such as the barbarians being unreliable, uncouth, loud, violent, uneducated, etc. For obvious reasons, this becomes even more pronounced after 1204. At its extreme, these involve pure demonizing - priests use icons as toilet seats, bathe in urine and use the ashes of animals in rituals.

This also serves as a very interesting illustration of how societies, when threatened, become more conservative and tend to pull into themselves, battling mightily to preserve their sense of what they are and retain what makes their place in the world unique. As any Byzantine student knows, the last half century or so of the Byzantine Empire contained several instances of the olive branch from the West being dangled before them - resolve the schism and join your Church to ours and an Army will come to save you. Whether any army would have staved off the inevitable is arguable. What is not is that when Emperors such as Michael Palaiologos gave any indication that they might accept such an offer, the residents of what remained of the Empire rose powerfully against it.

This was a very enjoyable work. Kolbaba uses an interesting method to organize her work but one which works quite well. If I have a criticism, I believe a bit more time could have been spent on the Latin reaction to these Lists. Were they offended? How often did letters arrive from the West reacting to the latest slander - as they surely perceived it - against their religious practices? Or were they relatively uncaring? Certainly the West wrote their own lists of errors of the Byzantines, but what did they think of these lists written in the East?

In any case, this work will make valuable reading for anyone interested in what the Greeks thought of their Western contemporaries; as well as giving a great deal of insight into how their society defended itself culturally against the physically stronger west; and how the Eastern Empire responded to its approaching destruction.

Byzantine Polemics - The True, the False and the Irrelevant
By Stefano Nikolaou
This is a fascinating book that deals with the Byzantine polemics against Latin errors. There is nothing like it in English. No wonder used copies are so expensive. It deserves to be reprinted.
Despite what Mr. Likoudis is claiming in the other review, the majority of the lists can hardly be described as 'hateful'. Tia Kolbaba analyses 13 lists, only a few of which are full of scurrilous and erroneous (not to mention silly) claims. Most of the texts are by reputable Byzantine authors like Photius, John of Kiev, Theophylact of Ochrid, Niketas Seides and Meletios Galesiotes (who had is tongue cut out for challenging the Catholic-convert Byzantine Emperor). There are some 'low' texts that are anonymous that make some wild claims in order to solidify the differences between Orthodox and Catholics but these are the minority. Many of the minor complaints are correct but are glossed over by Kolbaba. For example, western nobles did eat beaver tail during lent because the Roman Catholic Church had declared it was fish. Latins did fast on Saturdays? Or that monks fought in as warriors in crusader orders. Not deep theology but accurate. Kolbaba is not at her best when analysing these minor complains. On the issue of fighting monks Kolbaba lamely remarks that some Orthodox monks did the same thing and gives the example of a Greek Bishop in Asia Minor who killed a 'saracen' and was defrocked. Not exactly the same as the Templars or the Teutonic Knights!
The top 5 errors (Azymes, Filioque, not fasting properly during lent, baptising incorrectly, Not accepting married priests) along with Papal claims still come up in discussions between Orthodox and Catholics.
There are a number of issues with the book.
1) Kolbaba is not trying to write a balanced book about the two sides. She gives the impression that Orthodox were obsessed with declaring Latins heretics. In reality Roman Catholic polemicists made just as many or more crazy claims against the Orthodox. For example good old Cardinal Humbert of Silva Candida in 1054 declared that the Orthodox had 'deleted' the Filioque from the Creed in Constantinople. Other authors kept trying to foster the 'Donation of Constantine' on the Greeks to bolster Papal claims. The Crusader historian William of Tyre claimed that Greeks were effeminate and deceptive. Another nice author is the 13th century Dominican William of Adam, who in his treatise 'How to Defeat the Saracens' advocated the conquest and assimilation of Orthodox lands as a stepping stone for conquering the Muslims. Another hateful author is the German knight Johann Schiltberger. He returned home after years of captivity in the east claiming that Greeks didn't even believe in the Trinity!
2) The second problem is that Kolbaba is concerned with lists rather than polemical literature as such (even though she admits a number of her texts aren't exactly lists). This means she leaves out the numerous polemical texts that only deal with one big issues like the Filioque, Azymes and Papal Primacy. This leaves the reader having the impression that the claims of the lists were more important than they really were. For example 7 lists complain that Latin bishops wear rings, 6 lists complain that Latins don't make the sign of the Cross properly, 12 lists complain about Azymes and 11 lists complain about the Filioque. However, 50 Byzantine authors wrote about the Filioque/ procession of the Holy Spirif and about the same number about the Azymes but these aren't put forward to show how insignificant the minor complains were. As a result authors like Niketas Stethatus (1005-1090), who wrote tracts against both the Filioque and Azymes, and Nicholas of Methone (died 1166), who wrote 3 works against the Filioque and one against Azymes, are not even mentioned.
3) The last problem is that Kolbaba does not adequately deal with the volatile politics of the period. Emotions ran high and tolerance was in short supply. She implies that the Latins were more accomodating but fails to give examples like the burning of 13 Orthodox monks on Cyprus in 1228 or the insistence of the Popes after Lyon in 1274 that the Greeks needed to insert the Filioque into the creed that this was not the case. If anything, Catholic powers were the agressors militarily on most occasions.
The book is only 230 pages long. Lots of room is taken up with the notes, biographical sketches, bibliography and index. The bibliography is excellent and the notes provide helpful elucidations. It would be hard for such a short book to cover the extra things I have mentioned so I'm being a bit harsh. Hopefully someone will write 'THE LATIN LISTS' to even things up.
